Council had a meeting and a debate broke out!

Wow. I’m pretty surprised to read that Norfolk Council had a meeting yesterday and they actually had a debate! Council meetings are usually pretty tame, with the debate actually taking place in the meeting before the meeting. Going to a council meeting is generally about as exciting as watching paint dry. Not yesterday in the discussion of tatoo parlors:

“Industrial areas? We’re not doing that,” [Ward 3 Councilman Anthony] Burfoot said.

“Oh yes, we are,” Councilman Barclay C. Winn responded. “You don’t understand fingers,” he said, holding up five fingers for the five votes.

Ah yes, the “can you count to five?” argument. Mayor Paul Fraim, Councilwoman Daun Hester and Burfoot are against locating the tatoo parlors in industrial areas, most of which are located in black neighborhoods.

The arguments of the 1950s against tatoo parlors just don’t stand up anymore. The only question is where they will be located. It seems no one on council wants them in their wards, the old NIBMY syndrome.

Play like adults here, boys and girls, and find a solution. After all, it’s going to cost the citizens of Norfolk some money if this thing goes to court.
