Local, Marshall Newman Amendment

Reason #9: Vote NO if…

Vote No Virginia… you are concerned that the amendment will be read by the courts to bar enforcement of domestic violence laws against unmarried partners.

  1. Rights and responsibilities go together. That is why children do not have the same property and contractual rights as adults, and it is why voting rights were extended to those of draft age.

One should not expect the rights of marriage without the responsibilities. Heterosexual couples can get married. The amendment is about HOMOSEXUAL couples.

  2. I know you want it to be only about homosexual couples but that is not the case and the language says so.

    Stop the lies, Jack.

  3. It is no lie that those heterosexual couples who want the protections of marriage can get married.

  4. Jack, who cares? You also argue that same sex couples can get around the amendment by pretending to be siblings. You’re grasping at straws with this kind of argumentation. The fact is that people can and do enter into committed relationships worthy of societal support without being married. Quit it with the social engineering.

If it was just about same sex couples it would contain the language “same sex couples.” It doesn’t.

  5. “Who cares?” is exactly the issue. To increase support for the “Vote No” position, people are concocting these horror-story scenarios for unmarried heterosexual couples, who have the simple expedient of getting married.

  6. Once again, you are mistaking reality for what you wish were true. There are many compelling reasons for choosing not to get married. There are no compelling reasons for denying these people the legal rights and obligations that they choose to execute through contracts other than marriage.

The real story here is your refusal to engage the actual language of the amendment, which does not specify same sex couples. Try as you might, there is no escaping that fact.

  7. Ganted, the Amendment does not specify same sex couples only. But so what? If a heterosexual couple choses to forego the advantages of marriage, they have to accept the consequences of that choice.
