Paper-verified voting: ya think?

Wanna bet George Allen is wishing we had paper-verified voting about now? After the canvass is complete, a “recount” is virtually unnecessary, as there is little to recount.

About Vivian J. Paige

A former candidate, I've learned a lot about politics, both good and bad. I'd prefer more of the former and a lot less of the latter and I'm trying to do my part!

  1. I entirely agree. The machines should be backed up by paper. My first ever voting experience was in Va. Beach, with punch-card ballots. It was very easy, and you could see the holes in the paper.

  2. Whatever it takes to make it fair and accountable.

AP is calling Webb the winner. Allen should do the right thing and not “Gore” this out.

  3. 7,000 votes is a lot to make up. I think the recount last year found 37 more votes – for the winner, I might add. If the canvassing shows no errors, Allen should concede. I expect he’ll be doing that tomorrow.

  4. One report said the absentee ballots had beed counted; another said they had not. What’s up there?

  5. A quick look at the SBE website shows that the absentee ballots have been counted in most areas but the conditional ballots have not.

  6. This race has been done since 1am or so. And I don’t think there’s been any worry in the Webb camp since this morning. Nor is there any need to push Allen into a concession speech – he’s irrelevant now, and we know it. Let him nudge the canvass numbers around all he wants – nothing is going to change. Then he can tell himself that he’s preserving his future in politics (ha!) by delivering a gracious speech tomorrow night.

And then? He can go back to California.

  7. Well, at least we’re not looking at lawsuits this year.

  8. How many of you thought back in July that Drake would keep her seat while Allen would be defeated? Unreal isn’t it?

  9. Why would Allen go back to California? He hasn’t lived there since he was a teenager. If everyone who lives in NOVA went back to the their home when a teenager, NOVA wouldn’t be blue anymore. ;)

  10. Who in Va Beach created the official form called “Precinct Ballot Spot Checks”? What could they tell us about Tuesday’s election? Why do election officials not want you to know.

  11. Where do we volunteer to help George pack up his noose, flag,
and cowboy boots? Guess there’s a lot of pressure on his shoulders now, since his actions were a major factor resulting in the Republicans losing the Senate. George Allen was a victim of his own self-created “Macaca Moment”. He can always write a book on “How NOT To Run A Campaign”.

  12. I don’t care where he goes, Jane. I’d just think she should be embarrassed to show his face around here.

And yes, I agree that we could use paper verified voting. Our voting system is broken, nationally. How many people (GOP govs, Chelsea Clinton, congressmen) got turned away at the polls or had to cast provisional ballots on Tuesday? A complete mess.

  13. Virginians concerned about e-voting should sign up with Virgnia Verified Voting
    http://www.vavv.org/

remember that the GA election is in 2007, so your local Delagate will be very receptive to your concerns.

  14. My delegate, John Welch 21st, could not be bothered to hear my concerns about voting problems in his district. Probably wishes he did something now that his candidate is losing.

  15. Alice,
I was going to suggest the same thing. Now if we could get lots of Dems and GOPers on board, perhaps the state house would move on it this year.
