VBCDC Breakfast with Brian Moran

Brian MoranDon’t forget that the Virginia Beach City Democratic Committee’s breakfast is tomorrow morning at 9am at Jason’s Deli. The speaker will be Democratic Caucus Chairman Brian Moran. The breakfast is $8.

About Vivian J. Paige

A former candidate, I've learned a lot about politics, both good and bad. I'd prefer more of the former and a lot less of the latter and I'm trying to do my part!

  1. Vivian, has Brian Moran announced he is running for Governor in 2009? When might he do so. Has he formed any exploratory committees, etc., to do so?

  2. Please convince Brian to become a Dem. again in the mold of a populist like Sen. Webb. For far too long he’s been speaking different tunes in different parts of the state. He should stand up for middle-class values that we all are in favor of, rather than continuing taking money from Wal-Mart, the auto dealers assn., payday lenders etc.. He should also stop pandering to the right on intrusive social values, ie, his “droopy drawers” bill and his support for the anti-gay clubs in high schools bill.

  3. Jonathan – I haven’t heard an announcement.

Issac – not sure what you’re referring to here. I’m thinking you have him mixed up with somebody else. The droopy drawers bill was Algie Howell. He’s been quite vocal is support of gay rights issues, including on this blog.

  4. I wish that you were correct about this but Brian voted for HB 1308 which was passed to restrict gay and lesbian students from meeting in public school classrooms after school.

When confronted by this odd vote by the local Alex. GLBT, Moran refused to attend the group’s monthly meeting to explain this vote.

Nevertheless, my chief concern continues to be Moran’s lack of regard for the poor and middle-class, yet he’s quick to help those representing the large financial interests. The guy has a very weak backbone.

  5. By the way, Vivian, I have and will continue to support your efforts and I applaud your work (and we can agree to disagree about Moran being an asset for progressives).

  6. Well, that is something I was quite unaware of. I’ll have to ask about that.

  7. Issac – I had a chance to talk to Brian about HB 1308 today. I’m told the language of the bill was changed and that the changed language, while not perfect, was palatable. Note that it now says:

…local school boards in their discretion may prohibit school facilities from being used by any student club or other student group that encourages or promotes sexual activity by unmarried minor students.

Brian said he did not want to vote to encourage sexual activity. He also said that he is well aware of the high suicide rate among young gays and lesbians.
