Thanks for posting about the contest, Vivian.

I guess I expected that people would be nominated based on how old people thought they were, and then we'd sort things out later. I also suspected there were more high school bloggers, and some of the college bloggers I thought were older. But live and learn.

If anyone doesn't want to register at vayd.org, just e-mail me your nominations at blogmasterATvaydDOTorg - put "Blogger of the Year" in the subject line.

"Bryan - it’s not a big deal to me that the YDs would want to nominate YDs "

Oh, and I agree with this too. I wouldn't expect a GOP blog 'award' to be awarded to a Dem (and vice versa), and I wouldn't expect a "Young at Heart" group to award a teenager with 'member of the year,' lol.

"How in the heck am I supposed to know who is in college and who is not?"

I thought the same thing. There are only a select few bloggers that I know the "general age" of. I don't know of anyone under 18 except for Kenton. Thanks for nominating me in the college category Vivian, and don't worry, I didn't feel like registering for an account either (sad to say I don't already have one), but I'll probably just email them my suggestions later on today. :)

Bryan - it's not a big deal to me that the YDs would want to nominate YDs :) I think the bigger issue is not knowing the divisions to put folks into.

Thanks for putting my name up in the college category, Vivian. I greatly appreciate it. I also have to agree with the fact that it can be hard to know what categories people fall into. There have been several times that I thought I knew a person’s age, but something would come along to prove my guess wrong.

I think that is part of the downfall of being primarily an “online community.” Although many of us know each other outside of the blogosphere, there are many times when the majority of our correspondence only takes place online – whether it be through blogs only, or also through emails and AIM.

As far as the argument that there should be a category for bloggers over 36, I think both sides of the argument are valid. There is no denying that Virginia’s most influential bloggers come from all difference age groups, ethnicities, parts of the commonwealth, religious beliefs, etc, and that is something that should be celebrated. Therefore, the contest’s officials must be an effort made to make it perfectly clear that younger bloggers/readers of blogs strongly value the work done by people who are not eligible for membership in VAYD.

At the same time, however, this is somewhat similar to the attitude that might be taken during a GOTV effort. Obviously a candidate would want to get as many of his/her supporters out to the polls as possible, which means that he/she will try to reach out to all age groups, ethnicities, religious groups, etc. However, there might be a person that is running point on how to specifically target each individual group.

Adam’s contest is sort of running point on recognizing younger bloggers. Does that mean that bloggers over 36 aren’t important? No. In fact, they very well might even influence the group’s final decision. It is just that the group is running point on recognizing younger bloggers.
