Minimum wage increase passes Senate

SB1327, which increases the minimum wage to $6.50 per hour, passed Senate Commerce and Labor Committee yesterday by a unanimous vote. From the Virginian-Pilot:

“It’s time now and I, quite frankly, don’t think the federal government has lived up to its responsibility in this area,” said Sen. Frank Wagner, R-Virginia Beach.

Now, if the Senate Republicans can get the House Republicans to agree. The House killed all of the minimum wage bills last week.

I’ve read the U.S. Constitution, and I sure can’t find any federal government responsibility involved in the minimum wage.

I support a minimum wage on the state level. Thats where it belongs. The state knows best the needs over its people. I don’t want a congressman from California deciding how much we here in Virginia make.

The minimum wage is ignorant economics. People get paid based upon supply and demand. The reason low skilled workers earn low wages is because there plenty of people without any skills. The fact we have illegal aliens in this country just adds to the supply.

If we raise the minimum wage, two things will happen. People will be fired because the work they do cannot pay for itself, and employers will find it cost effective to automate and lay off additional unskilled workers.

If the Democrats were serious about helping Americans earn their keep, they would do something about the illegal aliens, and they would support school choice (improving educational opportunities).

It seems the Democrat Party only cares about keeping people dependent upon the government. No school choice, only government should have guns, welfare, single-payer health care, etc.

Last warning, Jack. It is insulting to call it the “Democrat” Party and you know it. You can make your point without doing that. I won’t warn you again.

How is it insulting? Is it an insult to be a Democrat now?

We’ve already been down that path.My blog, my rules. Refer to the Democratic Party by its proper name or find another place to hurl your insults.

We went down that path, and you couldn’t explain it before, either. The best you could come up with is “it grates on my ears.” How insulting. How ’bout changing the name to “The Perpetually Offended Party”?

Shall we get back to debating issues?

    Vivian,

I enjoy your blog and consider you generally reasonable…..but isn’t this an over-reaction ?

what you have here is some classic Jack. I like how he bothers to capitalize the “D”

oh Jack, I love you in a gay way!

Oh, Vivian, you need to back off in this “fight”. You are one of the good ones and it makes no sense to expend your considerable respectability on such a silly issue.

    The “Democrat Party”? Please.

Let’s do this: You compose an essay explaining why that is such a distasteful phrase, and halfway through the writing when you realize how ridiculous it is in the grand scheme of things you gracefully admit you were slipped a shot of Kool-Aid and have now recovered your senses.

There are, I’m sure, plenty of legitimate reasons to ban Jack from your site, but this is certainly not one of them.

Has anyone noticed that instead of having anything kind to say about the minimum wage bill, we are having discussion on the proper use of the term “Democrat”?
