Lieberman to endorse McCain

The Associated Press has confirmed that Joe Lieberman will be endorsing Republican John McCain Monday.

The Connecticut senator, an independent who was the Democrats’ 2000 vice presidential nominee, was scheduled to announce his support for McCain at a town hall meeting Monday morning in Hillsborough.

The article says that Lieberman will continue to caucus with the Democrats.

  1. Eh… Could be worse, I guess. Lieberman could be endorsing, say, Rudy Giuliani.

  2. Why would Republicans care whom a Democrat endorses?

  3. Independents can pick which primary they want to vote in, so if Lieberman helps bring them to McCain, it’s significant.

  4. Actually, in most states, one has to register as a member of a particular party to vote in the party’s primaries. In Virginia, we do not register as members of any parties, so we are ALL independents.

  5. It’s no surprise … the real question is … if McCain wins the R nomination … will Lieberman be his choice for V-P?

  6. AEM – what you say is true but a lot of states also allow people to change their registration to vote in the primary and then change it back to independent status afterwards. So yes, it could draw independent voters to the polls.

Shawn – I read something somewhere that said that this could be the beginning of a 3rd party run. We’ll see how that pans out.

  7. Aside from a mutual bloodthirst, the workaday politics of these guys are pretty far apart. Not going anywhere. Lieberman’s endorsement won’t bring McCain a single vote beyond Joe’s (I bet Hadassah will vote for Mitt).

That said, it’s a pretty poor reflection on Dems that they give Lieberman the Homeland Sec. gavel. They ought to snatch it from him and whack him over the head with it. Oh, what, that mean’s he’ll cry and caucus with the GOP? Fine. It’s not like the Dems are doing anything with the majority anyway.
