Look in the mirror first before you condemn pastor Wright,America's past and present are the same.Nothing can save this country, not Hillary,Obama or McCain!Look at what this country has come to the brink of disaster, the war in Iraq, displacement of american workers, corporate greed, lying politicians, and the news media which is self serving not reporting the real truth on race in this country! Who are you to judge anyone, this government invaded Iraq on lies. Also all around you -you see that this nations politicians don't enforce the laws it creates! As a black man in this country I deal with racisim every day of my life! I don't agree with pastor Wright's statement on aids, but, I do agree with what the pastor say about this country!I suggest you read psalms 82:1-8.

Before anyone writes another blog entry on this, I really think they should read the *whole sermons* from which the controversial quotes came.

For instance, just reading a little further into the "God damn" controversy shows that Wright wasn't in any way preaching violence...he was preaching against it:

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible <b>for killing innocent people,</b>" he said in a 2003 sermon. "God damn America <b>for treating our citizens as less than human.</b> God damn America <b>for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.</b>"

That sounds like religion to me -- that damnation is called for in the bible for killing innocents, treating people as less than human and for acting like God. It may not be what *I* believe, but it's really just not controversial in content -- it is of course, controversial in delivery. However, when Falwell et al. went after the same topic they went after individuals (not our country's policies) -- they named gays, abortionists, pagans ( I can't remember them all, I'm sure feminists were in there too).

While Wright speaks in a fiery manner, he doesn't condone or preach violence. He speaks out angrily against injustice.

On the point of whether or not Obama heard hateful things (or overheated rhetoric) -- well, it looks like after combing through as many sermons as they could find, this is what they've got. And he was at that church how long? Even if we just go by the 20 years, that's what? 900 sermons?

Go ahead and google the text of his Audacity to Hope sermon, too. Just for some context about what was happening in his pulpit.

(If it matters, I'm white and not at all involved in organized religion.)

I was a Trinitarian and ceremonies I witnessed were very explosive and moreso enpowering. The cover-up the world pretends not to see! Well Pastor Wright educates his members/vistors on the reality of it, as a whole. Anyone can look at Jeremiah Wright and tell he has white blood running through him. However, that is not the point, he is against the tactics and sacrafices white american greed imposes on black people and people undeserving of their selfishness. You are right, 20 years of sitting in a service with one preaching reality.....is very intimidating! I am glad that Obama knows who is. Obama being such a strong individual is not afraid, intimidated, or scared to grab the hands of others...despite color.....and those opposing him....to embrace the change that is needed and long over due!! Unlike the ignorance of others he knows things can not stay the same or under the leadership of the cold greedy american politicians that are now being housed. If republicans are elected we all are going to pay a much higher price than what we are now experiencing; gas prices, healthcare, outsourcing, decline in economy, more poverty, higher crime rates and so much more. If we could only come together....we would help ourselves as well as many others!! Also, regarding the kkk statement with the referencing of Pastor Wright - Jeremiah has not and does not have blood caused by murdering others on his hands or the mindset to justify mass murdering for being a certain color on his hands. He talks about innocent people being killed because of greedy americans. If people don't know by now (and I happen to think they do) what happen with 9/11, you are not in touch with reality. Suggestion: Go rent Michael Moore DVD - 9/11 movie.

Regarding Jeremiah Wright God damn comment:

When the republicans was selling George Bush as a conservative christian all I heard here in the south was "God was bringing damnation and judgement on America when 9/11 happened, because of the all the innocent blood being shed in the abortion clinics. But when Jeremiah Wright say God is damning America for it's unjust treatment of the poor and blacks it's offensive. PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE give me a break.

I tired of media telling me what I should "THINK".

In a 3 minute soundbite of Jeremiah Wright, the last 1 minute which is most crucial, never get played or presented to public for an opinion uhmmmmmmm I wonder why. Do you think that, A MAN SAYING,

"JESUS TEACHES HIM TO LOVE HIS ENEMIES", is an important character trait.

MAYBE NOT WHEN YOU ARE DOING A HIGH-TECH LYNCHING!!!!!!!!!!

Very well said! If only the masses would come to this realization. I found the following post on a CNN page this morning it reads as follows.

BEGIN QUOTE
“If I judged everyone by those they were aquainted with and their pastors, relatives or friends, I probably wouldn’t have very many friends or relatives left myself.

Besides I always try to remember when I point fingers at someone else there are always three pointing right back at me!!

All 10 of us still plan to vote for Obama!” - BillyJean.
END QUOTE

I'm afraid if that is the general attitude out there, we are all in for a rough ride. :)

Trying to keep on the subject of Obama/Wright and his speech. It's hard I know to just concentrate on that. But tha's the subject and unfortunately the riff.
Many Americans (more to the right of course) are looking for a reason not to support him. Pastor Wright "ignorantly" has thrown out a bone. One that Obama could have passed on but didn't.
It took great courage to go public on this coast to coast. But then to mis-handle the ball a bit I can't figure out. As many have said Wright's words were far from just being controversial, the man's simply mad. I don't mean just a conspiracy theorist. I mean wacked!
It's not like I haven't heard Christian preachers say stupid things. They convinced most that "W" was running on the "GOD" ticket and that opposing him was like opposing GOD and most bought it. they have also said things that were pro-white, pro-black, anti-women, anti-immigration as well as very stupid things from everyday life.
However, when most "logical" people hear these things, as did Ms. Paige, they leave, they don't go back, they find someone else, somewhere else to go worship. Why not Obama? Why not do it now?
To many it's going to show bad judgement. I understand not buckling under pressure to denounce, condemn, someone you like. But he's running for President and not all the rules work the same, especially for Obama. I think his speech, while courageous, was weak and only helped Clinton which in turn will elect another Republican.

I am a white Viet Nam (Marine). I wanted Barack Obama as our President in 2004.I trust in one thing he said "We Have a Awesome God". I have Hope and we will Change. Reverend Wrighte is being called a racist. It is easier than understanding why he said the thing he did. Even Peter denied Jesus three times. Barack Obama will by President with a little help from his friends and Prayers from the Church Jesus the Christ built. (E PLURIBUS UNUM) From many one. Trust, Hope, Change.

B Daley....if Obama's lack of experience is the case....I guess Abraham Lincoln wasn't "experienced" enough? He had the same amount of "experience"- BOTH spent 8 years in the Ill House. Lincoln lost a Senate race and then spent ONE term in Congress.

Lincoln then got the nomination on the THIRD ballot...I guess they "didn't know enough" about him either!

You can't even put Obama's name in the same mix as Clinton and MCcain! They have given most of there adult lives to public service. It takes more than a feel good speech and that "Change" rhetoric to convince me Obama is qualified to be President of the U.S.A. Eight years as a State Senator and two years as a U.S. Senator is not enough to qualify this young man to be President of the greatest country the world. We don't know enough about Obama!

Hello Vivian,

I have to disagree with your assertion that Obama lied about hearing Wright's comments, and that words from his speech prove this.

If you read/listen carefully, you can tell that Obama was very selective in the language he used when answering questions about Wright, especially in the speech. He said he was not in attendance and did not hear the tirade which caused the controversy. That has since been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

But in his speech, which you have quoted above, he discusses other criticism which he did hear and his carefully chosen language is really quite impressive:

“Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in the church? Yes.”

As you can see, he creates a difference between the comments that caused the uproar--which he did not hear--and comments "that could be considered controversial." There is no way that Wright's comments could be merely "considered controversial," so he separates words he heard from words that have caused the uproar.

I believe this difference, and this separation between comments he heard and the comments that created the controversy are very important, and I believe it was an expert use of language in the speech to create this separation and difference.

The argument can be made that perhaps Obama heard something on par with those statements, but it seems to be hard to prove, and in this instance, I don't think Obama can be called a liar.

Joan,
I feel that I have to respond to your comment about the Catholic Church. I am a devout Catholic who happens to really love her faith (although she disagrees with some of the positions it has taken in the past few years).
What happened to the children was horrible and was wrongly covered up by some clueless leaders of the church. However, you cannot make generalizations- ALL PRIEST do NOT molest children. Period.

The Catholic church has bungled their handling of these victims and I disagree with that wholeheartedly but there is much good in our church.
I invite you to go to a local Catholic church and see for youself.
Pax Christ.

Hi VJP! Been a while since I've said anything on here but I'm one of those who are still genuinely undecided. Lawd... what's a disappointed Pub to do! lolol I don't trust Sen. Clinton but on the other hand the point of your post was this: Did Sen. Obama lie about hearing his pastor say hard and hateful things. He answered that question. Thanks. That puts me back where I was... do I support the warmongerer Sen. McCain (who allows the Party to continue to be hijacked by 'conservatives' or the other two. ARRRRRRRGH!

Keep putting it out there. Help us decide.

I find it utterly amazing that a post questioning whether someone is telling the truth or telling a lie gets me lumped in with the smear machines that we all know exist. I thought I was pretty clear when I said:<blockquote>Let me be crystal clear: I believe Obama lied about not hearing his pastor say this stuff. Whether his pastor was right or wrong is not the point. Had he said “I was there, I heard him say this stuff, I didn’t agree with it and told him so at the time” or something like that, his story would have been plausible. But to attend a church for 20 years and say that he didn’t hear it is just BS.</blockquote>
All of the excuses and rationalizations can't change the fact that Obama's initial statements on this issue were not credible.

Yes I would continue to attend the church. I love America but detest the actions some of its citizens have committed on other citizens. Historically separate but equal laws protected certain citizens who were allowed to get away with horrible crimes because they were born to a certain group. Jeremiah Wright is a product of that era. His experience is real. He never lynched, raped or killed anyone. He did however survive an era when those acts were routinely committed on people like him. There was no protection for people like him. He is speaking the truth....sometimes the truth hurts.

If the church I belonged to molested & raped little children like say the ...Catholic Church I would leave. Last time I checked speaking ones mind is not a criminal act. Raping little children is...

Observer, I think that's a reprehensible thing to say. Equating what Vivian wrote here with any of those things demonstrates a serious disconnect from reality. I disagree with Vivian on the importance of this incident (I think), but to throw her criticism in with those moral cesspools? You either don't know what you're talking about, or . . . no, you just don't know what you're talking about.

Vivian, I have come to deeply respect your views and enjoy your blog - it makes one think, and think deeply, which is not often the case these days. On this post, however, we part company.

The way you (and others) treat Obama on this issue is the exact equivalent of Whitewater to the Clintons, swiftboats to John Kerry, Willie Horton to Dukakis, the 2000 slime against McCain, the way they treated Max Cleland, . . . the list is endless. If you are not part of the Washington machine against real change in America, and I truly hope you are not, I hope you wake up soon.

This from a white male independent -- if that makes any difference.

Vivian,
If minister Wright open every sermon with "GOD DAM AMERICA", and senator Obama attended church there, then he is lying. On the other hand, if these words was in only one or a few of his sermons, then it is possible that senator Obama is not lying.
In your bio you say
I learned a lot about politics as the result of my run for City Treasurer. This blog is my way of staying in touch with those who supported me and reaching out to those who did not.
Is it possible that what you learned was the "old" politics of distorting your opponent's words to the point where the masses become so confused that they are unable to make an intelligent decision who will best represent their interest, and could this be the source of your lost (the American public have become sufficiently sophisticated that they become irritated with you when you treat them like they are still bumpkins) .
Would you consider using your talent to help enlighten the electorate ( as Obama appears to be doing, and attracting millions of previously turned off citizens back to the political arena)

Will Obama continue to have the momentum going into Pennsylvania now that the far "Wright" truth message has been uncovered?

Obama's campaign is going to have to shore up some more positive and credible resources to overcome this crippling blow to his image.

Watching the Obama speech now. Can't accuse him of trying to sweep this under the carpet. On first hearing? I think I respect him a bit more.

My $0.02 - Anon E. Mouse's message would have been the right one. "If I had to agree with every position my pastor took, I’d never go to church." Simple. True. Brilliant. Obama's advisers told him to run from this, but the signal they're sending with such a blanket refutation is that we all should be deeply concerned that Obama ever went to church with this guy. I hope they learn some sort of lesson from this.

If this church is so great, why is Obama lying about attending and hearing certain sermons? Simple question.

T-Shirt,

Like I said, the churches which are mainstream, integrated and welcoming of all are usually not the ones with a raving lunatic for a pastor-regardless of denomination. I pick on the Methodists for obvious reasons because the church and Hillary Clinton who is an adherent, has a muddled policy with regard to gays and lesbians and I resent that.

To be fair to her, she has changed her position on the Defense of Marriage Act but the fact that the discrimination signed into law by her husband cannot be changed at this time is really very galling .

sb - I did attend a church in the 70's that was a "both church", it was in a black neighborhood and was attended by both African Americans and non-African Americans, as well as different life styles.

There were churches in the 70's that didn't exclude people, for whatever reason. People look for a church that expresses their feelings and beliefs and I chose one that wasn't segrated. They were available here in Norfolk, if you chose to attend one, as I am sure there were in Chicago at that time, if one chose to attend it.

By the way, it was a Methodist Church.

Vivian,

This is my last post, hon. I officially give up. If you want to reduce a 36 year ministry to a three minute intemperate rant about American hypocrisy on race-fine. If you what to believe Sean Hannity and Fox News over Barack Obama, that's fine too. It is still a free country. But the truth is that you cannot answer my questions because you know and can't admit the answers and neither can white America.

I love you anyway because you reached out to me two years ago and told me to continue blogging. I will never forget that or turn my back on you. It doesn't matter to me anymore who you believe should be president. We disagree and it will never change. I'm O.K. with that and I'm O.K. with you.

Love, Peace and Hairgrease,

And that has what to do with whether Obama lied?

Are you denying that Obama claims both to have attended this church and to never have heard Wright make comments like God damn America?

Obama can go to church where ever he wants. But lying about doing so tells me a whole lot about his character.

Vivian,

So there is something wrong with belonging to an integrated, afrocentric, gay-friendly, progressive church that has been a positive force in the community since its founding? Really? Enlighten me. To be honest with you, unless it was a Unitarian Chuch or an MCC, I have never read, seen, or heard about a single mainstream African American Church that specifically had a life affirming ministry for gays and lesbians, not to mention one that had one before the 90's.

But on the strength of misinformation planted by Fox News, Sean Hannity, and somebody's sophisticated opposition research, I am supposed to castigate the bi-racial Barack Obama, his family of many colors, his 8,000 member church that neither of us has never stepped foot in and his Pastor as being "hateful."

I can't do that, hon. Neither should you.

I defy you to name one gay-friendly, mainstream protestant African American congregation you've ever stepped foot in where you've experienced hatred.

You can't because there is no such thing.

sb - no I do not understand that perfectly well. I've never heard a preacher say God damn America until Wright said it.

And it is no leap to say Obama is lying - because he is. Your question about gays is more irrelevant to the topic at hand - that's, whether Obama is lying - than my comment about my father. Obama is not being attacked for belonging to that church. He is being attacked for lying about it.

Prove it. The MSM has ignored this story for over a year. Had they not been so eager to paint Obama as the second coming the public would have had this information long ago. Instead they chose to drag up anything -real or perceived - negative about Hillary. And way too many bought it - hook, line, and sinker.

Now that the vetting process has started folks are discovering they may have bought a pig in a poke. And that stench you're smelling? It's not from the Hillary campaign.

Besides, you seem to think that my indignation somehow comes from the Hillary campaign. It does not. I speak only for myself.

Vivian,

You understand perfectly well the context of that statement. It was a statement of condemning American hypocrisy. Whether your father, a man who was a full generation older than Wright, would have said what Wright did is irrelevant. To step up and say that Obama is "lying" is a big leap. You still haven't answered my question about any black minister that openly accepted gays and lesbians as members of his church in the 70's, nor have you acknowledged Wright's AIDS ministry and ministry for gay and lesbian singles. Too many black pastors are stuck in the 19th century, Wright isn't and Obama is being attacked for being a member of Afrocentric, integrated, and gay-friendly church. It's amazing. In contrast, the nonsensical and distorted contortions Hillary Clinton's Methodist Church has gone to deny gay clergy and gay parishioners the blessings of the church remains unremarked upon.

Who do you think made sure the MSM got the tape last week -- just hours after Ferraro stepped down? And if you're going to disqualify candidates because they told a lie (which we don't know for sure YET in this case) then there will be no one's name on the ballot next fall -- including HRC. In her case, she lets those lackeys around her (Wolfson, Penn, McAuliffe, etc) do it for her. I could accept the indignation here if HRC's hands were clean, but there has been a stench from her campaign from Day One. I'm about ready to throw in the towel on the whole works. NONE of them are talking about anything important or of substance -- just busy playing "gotcha." Start practicing saying: "President McCain."

sb - I'll repeat what I said above: I've never heard a black pastor use the kind of language that Wright used. And I've been to a lot of churches in my lifetime.

Whether Wright is a good man is not the issue. I can't imagine my father saying God damn America.

Regardless - that's not my point. My point is simple: Obama is either lying about how often he went to church or lying about not having heard Wright say similar things. Either way, he's lying. And that speaks to his character.

Vivian,

Can you name one black pastor in Norfolk that openly welcomed gays and lesbians into the church in the 70's. Anybody who really believes that a "black racist" has a logical reason for joining a white denomination, the United Church of Christ, to be a black separatist is either crazy or stupid or both. It is a lie. Wright has said nothing I haven't heard before or will hear again in a black church. This is what Al Gore calls, "a convenient truth." Who benefits.

As I tried to say above, Wright is an disciplined non-conformist when it comes to inclusion and openness. He practices what he preaches and what the United Church of Christ teaches.

While you're pondering that, what is Hillary's Methodist Church's position regarding gay clergy and gay unions and who should she be denouncing?

Finally, thanks for your friendship and encouragement. They are greatly appreciated.

Can you name one black pastor in Norfolk that openly welcomed gays and lesbians into the church in the 70’s. Anybody who really believes that a “black racist” has a logical reason for joining a white denomination, the United Church of Christ, to be a black separatist is either crazy or stupid or both. It is a lie. Wright has said nothing I haven’t heard before or will hear again in a black church. This is what Al Gore calls, “a convenient truth.” Who benefits.

Viv, not so fast. It might've been smart NOT to wait until the fall for this. I'd bet a shiny new nickel GOP higher-ups want HRC, if not for McCain, but for many down-ticket races. If anything, they might've waited too long.

Um...yeah, sure, "good year to be a Libertarian". You might manage to get a whole percentage point in the election this year as opposed to the 0.32% the Libertarian candidate managed to get in 2004.

Or are you going to get the other crazy uncle (Ron Paul) to run and you might manage to get 2.5% of the vote?
