OTR 05/11: Robertson, transportation

OTR LogoThis Sunday’s On the Record will feature a segment with Gordon Robertson, son of Pat, CEO of CBN and co-host of The 700 Club.

In the other segment, host Joel Rubin is joined by Phil Shucet, former Commissioner of VDOT. Shucet has proposed a bridge to connect the Southside and Peninsula, rather than another tunnel.

And in his My Minute segment, Rubin opines on the meaning of superdelegate Jennifer McClellan’s switch from Clinton to Obama.

Catch OTR at 11:30am on WVEC. If you miss the airing, it will be available on the website on Monday.

  1. A bridge instead of a tunnel would be a horrible mistake if one takes into consideration the needs of the Atlantic Fleet.

Proponents of a high rise bridge say it would be cheaper and actually harder to disable due to a terrorist attack. However a bridge brought down due to determined military action would bottle up much of the Atlantic Fleet.

A collapsed, flooded tunnel will not prevent warships from passing over it, however a collapsed bridge could block the channel.

Let us not forget, that when the huge Charleston Naval Base was closed down, one of the justifications for its closure was that the ships based there had to go under a bridge to get to open water.

  2. My understanding is that discussions have been held with the Navy about the bridge and it can be done.
