Deadline passes, Bobby Dyer unchallenged

Yesterday was the filing deadline for November elections in Virginia Beach and Suffolk. A healthy number of candidates have filed for the council and school board seats up for re-election.

In Virginia Beach, there are four candidates for mayor, five for the council at-large seat, two for the Rose Hall district council seat, three for the Kempsville district council seat, six for the two at-large school board seats, and two each for the Centerville and Rose Hall School Board seats. Councilman Bobby Dyer, who represents the Centerville district, is the only council member to be unopposed. Two school board seats – Kempsville and Princess Anne – will also be unopposed.

Suffolk is electing its mayor for the first time. Seven people have filed. An equal number of candidates has filed for the three available seats on the Suffolk school board.

Meanwhile, in Norfolk, the three incumbents for school board were reappointed, despite the fact the “[e]leven [other] people contacted the city to express an interest in serving this year.” Hmm.

About Vivian J. Paige

A former candidate, I've learned a lot about politics, both good and bad. I'd prefer more of the former and a lot less of the latter and I'm trying to do my part!
