American Idol 04/28/09: standards

American Idol LogoThe Fab Five of American Idol took on the music of standards from the Rat Pack era. As expected, the guys all showed up in skinny ties :) I find the genre a strange choice for a pop star program; while I love this music, I can’t imagine there are many who watch this show that have heard the songs before. (Of course, all of these are songs that I sang regularly back in the day.)

The mentor was an interesting choice: Jaime Foxx. Not who I would have chosen – after all, not all of the singers from that era are dead.

Kris chose to sing “The Way You Look Tonight.” Not a bad job, but certainly not an updated version of the song.

Allison, who turned 17 Monday, sang “Someone to Watch Over Me.”  Awesome, simply awesome! Now that’s a performance I could see being on the radio today.

“My Funny Valentine” was the choice of Matt. I know why Foxx wanted him to change the key but truthfully, it made the song a little boring. Had he left it in the higher key, it would have allowed a slightly different interpretation.

Danny sand “Come Rain or Come Shine.” Really, really good ending saved the performance. But for that, I was getting bored.

Adam sang “Feeling Good,” probably the least known of the choices tonight. I have the same complaint as always: I wish he would sing and not scream. Just once, I’d like to hear a complete song without the scream.

I think Kris had the most forgettable performance. I expect Matt will join him in the bottom two.

About Vivian J. Paige

A former candidate, I've learned a lot about politics, both good and bad. I'd prefer more of the former and a lot less of the latter and I'm trying to do my part!
