Weekly roundup 8/1/09

Stories from the week that you may have missed:

  • The “birthers.” Not familiar with the term? Well, these are people who believe that President Obama is not a natural born US citizen. Below the Beltway has been all over this.  CNN’s Lou Dobbs and Rep. Bob Goodlatte are just two of the big names in this movement, which seems to be spearheaded by the efforts of Orly Taitz.
  • Polls. Survey USA put out a poll this week that shows the Republican candidates for governor, LG, and AG leading their Democratic opponents. The poll appears to have oversampled Republicans. Next Tuesday, PPP will be releasing their own poll on the race. In an earlier post, they say they think the turnout model will show about 50/50 Rs and Ds.
  • Fraudulent letters sent to Congressmen. Constituent letters are pretty important to legislators. So when they turn out to be fraudulent, as The Daily Progress reports, it’s a pretty big deal. The situation has gone national, with Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) announcing an investigation.
  • Gubernatorial debate. Last Saturday, the candidates for governor – Democrat Creigh Deeds and Republican Bob McDonnell – squared off in the first debate of the season. If you missed it, it will be available at some point on Virginia Talks. A pretty good roundup of the debate can be found here.

Yeah – there was also the cash for clunkers thing and the beer thing, but I figured everybody knows about those :) What did I miss?

About Vivian J. Paige

A former candidate, I've learned a lot about politics, both good and bad. I'd prefer more of the former and a lot less of the latter and I'm trying to do my part!

  1. A Presidential candidate doesn’t have to supply a birth certificate?

  2. It doesn’t matter what proof you show these “birthers” they don’t care! They are so full of hate and anger that facts only confuse and upset them. They LOST! They just can’t get over it! So they make up stories, tell lies and foster hate and contempt. In other words. Republicans!

  3. All we want to see is an ORIGINAL birth certificate, not a reproduction. Why is that too much to ask? Why does Obama spend millions to keep from providing it?

  5. Birthers ~ People who think Gore won in ’00.

    • Not sure what you are getting at here, since the 2000 race had nothing to do with a birth certificate.

      • Yeah, but they are on the same level of irrational thought mixed in with some logical things. While I do think hes a citizen, Obama hasn’t played this thing picture perfect so it keeps giving people on the other side who wish he wasn’t president plenty of ammo. For the Bush v. Gore, had the laws been different at the Gore probably would have won, but they weren’t and the whole media circus and supreme court decisions (9-0 and 5-4), gave people on the left endless ammo to attack the legitimacy of Bush’s presidency. If it’s not one thing, it’s another.
