I started this blog to talk about local politics, specifically Norfolk politics. It is impossible
to talk about Norfolk in a vacuum, so you'll also find some regional, state, and national politics. And sometimes, no politics at all.
The inspiration for this blog comes from one of Virginia's most respected forefathers:
"I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power."
Thomas Jefferson, 1820

Why does this surprise you? McDonnell, who ignored the Virginia Constitution, when he championed HB3202, then defended this wholly illegal mess in court, has been trying to court the “conservatives”, who, when they check his record, are not happy either. McDonnell not only is against “choice” he’s a ‘bad-choice’ for Virginia.
I won’t begrudge any Attorney General for defending a law that has been duly passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor; that’s in the job description, “Enon.”
As for the ad, is there a difference between “introducing” a bill — I notice that each example is cut off at that point — and signing on as a “patron”? If there is, Deeds charge of dishonesty sounds a lot like a case of projection.
And by the way, “Enon,” I agreed that HB 3202 was unconstitutional.
I thought Democrats liked people who try to defend those who cannot defend themselves.
Still pursuing the social issues tactic, eh? Remember how well that worked for Jerry Kilgore?
Ouch? Really? The best thing that I can say about this ad is that it is not as dumb as Kilogre’s “Hitler” ad from 2005.
This ad would be okay for TV, but it’s not good for the web. Too many viewers are going to think “Does the Deeds Campaign understand how the GA works?”
Knowing that the answer is “yes,” the only conclusion is that the Deeds campaign is dishonest that it believes those who see the ad are morons.
The best that Deeds can hope for is that this ad is a wash – which is probably right.
Deeds needs to start having some original ideas sometime soon.
Oh please!

McDonnell took an oath to “defend and uphold the Constitution”, that does not give him a free pass to defend a law, passed by the legislature! Furthermore, McDonnell was bragging to anyone who would listen in 2006/2007 that he was the “Chief Negotiator” for that bill and wanted all the credit for it! He could easily have passed this off to an underling, like he did much of his duties, and put some distance between him and this unconstitutional mess. BUT HE DIDN’T!
McDonnell was told by most Republicans that it was “unconstitutional”, and if you will recall, the past Chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia Patrick McSweeney was the lead attorney on the challenge!
You can twist this anyway you like, but the fact is, MCDONNELL CRAFTED AN ILLEGAL UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAW, HE WANTED AND TOOK CREDIT FOR IT, THEN DEFENDED IT IN COURT! The average, everyday Joe on the street could read it and see that it was “unconstitutional” so McDonnell either knowingly pushed this, or is simply so ignorant, that he couldn’t see the difference. Either way, he is unqualified to be Governor of Virginia. Hell he isn’t even qualified (his glaring lack of knowledge of the Constitution) for the Attorney General, much less a higher office.
I have seen this same lame defense of McDonnell in the past, “oh its his job to defend the laws passed by the G.A.” and it simply is pathetic. IT IS NOT HIS JOB TO DEFEND OBVIOUSLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAWS! IT VIOLATES HIS OATH OF OFFICE!
One additional point. The “obligation” to defend laws is to men/women elected by the people. The “Oath” is to God. Which one do you think is more important?
It’s really funny listening to liberals’ crying about laws’ being unconstitutional.
Its really funny to see people with IQ’s under double digits misidentify someone as a ‘liberal’!!!
If you are not a liberal, Moose, then I apologize — it is an insult that no-one should have to take if it is not deserved!
