ICYMI: McDonnell on Fox News Sunday

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell appeared on Fox News Sunday.

The 10-minute interview, conducted by host Chris Wallace, wasn’t as friendly as McDonnell had probably hoped. On several occasions, Wallace just nailed him.

Check it out.

A former candidate, I've learned a lot about politics, both good and bad. I'd prefer more of the former and a lot less of the latter and I'm trying to do my part!

  1. It looked to me like Wallace took good shots, but McDonnell handled them well.

    Where was Deeds?

  2. I just watched the whole thing..where did Wallace “just nail him”

On the thesis? I think its been made pretty clear what McDonnell actually meant. If you read the quote it says “Ultimately detrimental.” Families are one mother, one father, and some kids. If the mom is not at the home or is not playing her role as a mother, then by definition the family is degraded. There is no arguing against that. He never said mothers dont love children or anything of the sort that Deeds make it out to be.

On the opportunity fund? It was a whole budget, you don’t vote on every line. To not pass a budget because of one thing would be foolish, we would have situation sort-of like Michigan has now.

    • Mothers who are at work or are “not at the home” are still “playing their role as a mother.” The family isn’t “degraded” when dad works, and it isn’t “degraded” when mom works, either.

Also, McDonnell did not limit his comments to working mothers, or even working mothers of preschoolers. He specifically referred to “working women.”

If you read the thesis, it is very, very clear what Bob McDonnell meant. He wants a return to that decades-ago social order that never really existed except as a figment on “Father Knows Best.”

No, but it is degraded when BOTH work.

        • Prove it. And tell us why it’s any of your business (or Bob McDonnell’s) to make that decision for other people.

And while we’re at it, remember, folks, that’s Bob McDonnell’s position, too. He thinks he should get to tell YOU what’s best for YOUR family, even though even his own family didn’t follow his backwards advice.

Are sure you are not confusing McDonnell with Obama and the Dems! That’s right, there is always a double standard w/ the Dems

          • We find a negative and significant effect on the child’s educational
attainment of the extent of mother’s full-time employment when the child was aged 0-5. The
effects of mother’s part-time employment and father’s employment are smaller and less well
            determined but again negative.

Ermisch, J. and M. Francesconi (2002), “The effect of parents’ employment on
children’s educational attainment,” ISER Working Paper No. 2002-21,
            University of Essex.
