Another retired USN member in favour of repeal of DADT. Emotionally, I don't actually like the idea. But the reality is that gays have been in the military always and die and serve as well as any other service members. I really don't think the troops are resistant as the politicos & brass think. This is 2010 - attitudes have changed a lot since I went in the Navy in 1976. Forgetting the issue of the "right or wrongness" of homosexuality, we just need to accept the fact that gay service members are just that - service members, and should not have to hide their sexual orientation in order to serve.

Quite frankly, I think women on ships & in combat situations have probably caused more issues than gay service members ever have or will. DADT is stupid and serves absolutely no purpose. Get rid of it.

Like RADM Ward, I am retired USN. I came from a sheltered small town environment where supposedly there were no gays. (LOL in retrospect) At about the 15 year period in my service, I realized that there were a number of highly qualified service members in my units who also happened to be gay. I was glad that they supported me, whether in the office or as a wingman or as someone maintaining my aircraft.

By my own experience observing my children and their friends, those likely to be serving on active duty are likely to have a number of gays who are close friends. I am a member of the great USNA class of 1968 like Webb and Mullen.

I personally endorse the removal of DADT.

The only difference will likely be that qualified people will still serve their country. That and straight & gay members of the military will no longer be forced to lie in order to protect team members that perform well and can be counted on in the heat of battle. It only takes a few tense moments to learn that performance is what you really care about ......not their sexual preference.

Our national debt is in such a horrible state. Whether or not gays are in the military, shouldn't even be on the list of concerns.
