Who will win?

We have four competitive races among the 11 Congressional districts in Virginia. Setting aside everything else, who do you think will win? Not who you hope will win, not the party-required answer, but who, truthfully, you think will win. Cast your vote in the polls below the fold. (I’ll keep this at the top of … Continue reading »

Friday fun: What Halloween character are you?

You Are a Witch You are sharp, crafty and intuitive. You are capable of so much!  You just seem to know things. You understand how to effect those around you. You know how to help, but you also know how to hurt. It’s up to you to decide if you want to use your powers … Continue reading »

Pilot endorsements: Suffolk in, 11 of 14

The Virginian-Pilot endorsed in the Suffolk races today. In my predictions, I admitted I hadn’t been following Suffolk very closely. Even so, I managed to get three of the four races called correctly.  The one I missed – J.B. Varney instead of incumbent Jeff Gardy – has an interesting twist: the Holy Neck Borough never … Continue reading »

Waiting for the 3rd shoe to drop

They say deaths come in threes. Monday morning, I saw in the obituaries that Al Teich had died Sunday. I was surprised that it took until Tuesday afternoon for The Virginian-Pilot to mention it – and then only in a brief piece mostly garnered from Monday’s obituary.  In the old days, the paper would have … Continue reading »

Pondering leadership

My latest column, title above, appeared in The Virginian-Pilot today.  I’ve been thinking for a while about what constitutes a leader, and had intended to do one of my “Opinion, please” posts on it. I find it frustrating that candidates call themselves leaders. Shouldn’t that be for others to say? Show me that others recognize … Continue reading »

DCCC ad shows Obama as the Joker

Yep. You read that right. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, in its infinite wisdom, put out an attack mail piece aimed at Independent 2nd CD candidate Kenny Golden. The front of the piece (below the fold) shows a crowd shot of what look like Tea Party protesters. Among the signs is the now infamous one … Continue reading »

On the constitutional amendments

Senators George Barker and Linda “Toddy” Puller have written an op-ed on the three constitutional amendments which will appear on the ballot. The senators were sponsors of all of them. In an editorial in Wednesday’s Virginian-Pilot, the board urges voters to support all three of the amendments, despite misgivings on question 2. The three amendments … Continue reading »

No excuse for this

There is something seriously wrong with people in this country when someone’s head gets stomped on simply for exercising their right to free speech.Or is freedom just another word for nothing left to lose?

Norfolk Ward 7 10/20 fundraising reports

Monday was the deadline for filing campaign finance reports for the period 10/1 – 10/20. Earl Fraley, who was endorsed by The Virginian-Pilot Monday, raised $1,927 in cash from 44 donors, the largest of which was $204. His major expenditures are for ads. I’m still not seeing the final cost of his yard signs. He … Continue reading »

Pilot endorsements: VB in, 8 of 10

So I’m 4 for 5 on the Virginia Beach City Council endorsements. The Virginian-Pilot endorsed all of my predictions save one: that of Tanya Bullock in the Princess Anne district.  The paper consider incumbent Barbara Henley to be a critical voice on council and wished that Bullock had run for an at-large seat. And based … Continue reading »
