The 6th name

The sixth person who received the email from RPVB chair David Bartholomew was Kenny Golden, the independent candidate in the 2nd CD and the immediate past chair of the RPVB. Golden’s email address was deliberately removed from the copy of the email that was sent around yesterday. This raises two possibilities in my mind: The … Continue reading »

Well, that didn’t take long

I was forwarded a copy of “the email” earlier today. My first instinct was to try to determine whether it was a valid email. After all, it’s pretty easy to fake an email these days by copying and pasting. After verifying that the email address of the sender was a valid one, around 2:30pm I … Continue reading »

Opinion, please: go to prison, lose pension

Consider this: A former city police detective who is serving two years in prison for his role in a marriage fraud ring could soon receive a retirement benefit funded by taxpayers. [...] If a city or agency certifies that an employee has committed malfeasance in office before he or she retires, the employee can lose … Continue reading »

Norfolk ward 7 fundraising reports

Friday was the filing deadline for financial reports covering 9/1-9/30 and three of the four candidates in the special election for Norfolk’s ward 7 filed electronically. Those reports were available just after 5pm on the State Board of Elections website. Some interesting things in the numbers: Earl Fraley raised $2,870 in cash from 19 contributors … Continue reading »

Just a quick reminder that the League of Women Voters, in conjunction with WHRO, are hosting a 3rd Congressional District candidates’ debate this evening.  All four candidates – Democratic incumbent Bobby Scott, Republican Chuck Smith, Libertarian James Quigley and Independent John Kelly – are expected to attend. Details: Location: Hampton City Council Chambers, 22 Lincoln … Continue reading »

Vote Virginia

Here is a brief video from last week’s Kiwanis Harbor Party. Enjoy!

Friday funny on a Thursday

I have to admit: when Daryl Lease first came to The Virginian-Pilot, I didn’t “get”him.  I was told, “Just keep reading” and I did. Now his columns provide me with LOL-moments every Thursday morning as I’m having my coffee. This guy is plain funny. Seriously. Check out his latest column. I wish I could write … Continue reading »

Forbes won’t debate

The Virginian-Pilot reports this morning that Republican incumbent, Randy Forbes, will not participate in a debate against his Democratic challenger,  Dr. Wynne LeGrow. Across the state, the local League of Women Voters have been arranging debates in each of the Congressional districts.  Locally, the Williamsburg League sponsored yesterday’s debate in the 1st (even though this … Continue reading »

Campaign rubbernecking

My latest column, title above,  appeared in The Virginian-Pilot today. One of the things referenced in the piece is the 1890 Harvard Law Review article by Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis, which you can read here. The concept of a right to privacy is one many of us take for granted – except when it … Continue reading »

Warner weighs in on Cranwell’s announcement

Sen. Mark Warner has weighed in on the retirement announcement of DPVA chair Dick Cranwell. His last sentence is quite interesting: Dick Cranwell has been a tremendous chairman over the past five years and a remarkable public servant for nearly 40 years.  When he accepted the role of Party chair in 2005, he believed he … Continue reading »

Cranwell to step down as DPVA chair

C. Richard Cranwell, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, announced today that he is stepping down. As you may know, I have been involved with politics in Virginia for the last 39 years. I have seen our party at its low and high points. I have had the privilege of serving in both … Continue reading »
