Tax return filing season starts today

1040 formTax filing season started today, its latest start ever. The delay was due to Congress’ inability to pass legislation in a timely manner. Even with the late start, some taxpayers are not yet able to file.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns from people claiming education credits in mid-February while taxpayers claiming depreciation deductions, energy credits and many business credits will be able to file in late February or early March.

The full list of forms affected by the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) that Congress enacted on Jan. 2 can be found here.

It’s going to be a lot more fun for me to be teaching taxes instead of doing taxes for the first time since 1986 ;)

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that Virginia is no longer issuing paper refund checks. All refunds will be either deposited directly to your bank account or issued via a debit card. Legislation that would have allowed the paper check refunds failed to make it out of a subcommittee earlier this week. And, of course, it didn’t take long for the scammers to come out. The following message is now on the Depart of Taxation website:

Way2Go Card Phone Scam:  We have been alerted that some individuals have received phone calls supposedly from the Virginia Department of Taxation saying their Way2Go prepaid MasterCard has been locked for security reasons and to press 1 to unlock it.  This phone scam is an attempt to collect personal information.  The Department never makes automated calls and never solicits personal information in this manner.  If you get such a call, please hang up.  Questions?  Call the Department at (804) 367-8031

A former candidate, I've learned a lot about politics, both good and bad. I'd prefer more of the former and a lot less of the latter and I'm trying to do my part!
