VP: Amendment won’t protect marriage

The Virginian-Pilot weighs in on the so-called Marriage Amendment today and gives a well-reasoned argument for Voting NO on this issue: Parse them anyway you like, but those 87 words [of the amendment] seek no less than to undo what Mason wrought in Virginia’s first days, sentiments that have stood the test of 230 years. … Continue reading »

“The religious community does not speak with one voice on this issue”

So said the Rev. Randy Orwig, pastor of Tidewater United Church of Christ in Virginia Beach. The topic was the so-called Marriage Amendment. Rev. Orwig is an opponent of the measure. Today, he rallied nearly two dozen ministers and priests to sign a statement opposing the amendment, which they call an “arrogant attempt” to write … Continue reading »

NJ Marriage Decision

By now, everyone has seen yesterday’s decision in the New Jersey Supreme Court regarding same-sex marriage. Coverage in the local and online MSM has been interesting, as it seems each writer has a different spin on what this means. For me, it means that the people of New Jersey will have to deal with this … Continue reading »

Ohio Atty: Learn from us and Vote NO!

So says Ohio Legal Aid attorney Alexandria Ruden: Unlike Ohio, Virginia voters have been alerted to the very serious adverse potential consequences of this proposed amendment well before the election. Our voters didn’t have adequate time to get fully informed before they voted. The consequence has been that police, prosecutors and victims have been in … Continue reading »

Another Mason Dixon poll was released tonight, this one on the so-called Marriage Amendment. The poll of 625 likely voters showed 52% in favor of the amendment, with 42% against and 6% undecided. Pilot errs in reprint of Cobb op-ed

The Virginian-Pilot today reprinted, without change, the op-ed piece written by Victoria Cobb of the Family Foundation, which first appeared in the Washington Post. In the piece, Cobb implies that former AG candidate, Senator Creigh Deeds, is a supporter of the amendment: In fact, McDonnell’s opponent for the attorney general’s office in the 2005 election, … Continue reading »

Edds: Voters can’t stop pride, progress

In case you missed it, Margaret Edds has a fine article in this morning’s Pilot on the so-called marriage amendment: Some years back, when Virginia’s old Byrd organization was in its death throes, a Capitol wit suggested a TV commercial for a member of the rear guard. The idea was to show the lawmaker with … Continue reading »
