Rerras and judicial selection

Today's Virginian-Pilot has a front page, above the fold article on the process of selecting judges in Virginia and, in particular, Norfolk. In the wake of last week's revelation of Nick Rerras' interview tactics, the article once again points out that the majority party makes the choice and that since Norfolk has a single member … Continue reading Rerras and judicial selection

The Pulpit Speaks: September 28, 1957

An article written by my father, the Rev. C. Thomas Paige, as it appeared in the Tri-State Defender on the date shown. Some people think it pays them well...To put on business airs... And play up their importance in... The handling of affairs... Their secretaries bolt their doors... And make their callers wait... And if … Continue reading The Pulpit Speaks: September 28, 1957

Race in Norfolk

I didn't write today's editorial in the Virginian-Pilot but I could have: It is hard to think of anything in Norfolk of public importance that race doesn't bend and shape, from crime to housing and real estate taxes to education. Ethics complaints were filed Thursday against Senators Kenneth Stolle (R-8th) and Thomas Norment (R-3) by Roanoke attorney G. David Nixon. The complaints allege conflicts of interest involving eminent domain reform legislation before the Senate. Both Stolle and Nixon are employed by the law firm of Kaufman & Canoles, whose clients (public utilities and governments) use … Continue reading Ethics charge: Stolle & Norment

Action alert: HB1727

HB1727 managed to get out of the House of Delegates with some minor changes. I consider this bill onerous and one that should have never made it out of committee. I met bill sponsor Matt Lohr at the ODU Alumni reception last night and he seems a nice enough guy but I guess Bob Marshall … Continue reading Action alert: HB1727

M Warner: Not running for Senate in ’08

Little birdies are whispering that Mark Warner will not be running for Senate in 2008. This falls in line with my earlier thoughts. At that time, I said: I will be quite surprised if he runs for the Senate seat, even if John Warner retires, as has been rumored. Down in the comments in that … Continue reading M Warner: Not running for Senate in ’08
