Georgia Allen files for VB council. Georgia Allen, the president of the Virginia Beach branch of the NAACP and former candidate for delegate, has filed to run for an at-large city council seat, according to the Virginian Pilot. The seat is currently occupied by Rosemary Wilson. In addition to the incumbent, Allen faces at least two others in that race. The deadline for filing to run for the November election is 7pm today.

Brent Mckenzie files for VB School Board. Longtime Democratic activist Brent Mckenzie will file today to run for the Rose Hall District seat on the Virginia Beach School Board, according to a press release I received this morning. The seat is currently occupied by Michael Stewart. As of last week, Stewart had not filed his paperwork but expressed his intention to run for re-election.

  1. I first met Georgia years back, and while I certainly wouldn’t say I know her very well (certainly not as well as I’d like), she struck me as an incredibly kind and thoughtful person. I think she’d do an excellent job representing folks on the city council. She has a tough race ahead of her against a crowded field of challengers and the incumbent Rosemary Wilson–whom I also know, and again not as well as I’d like since I mostly know her through her daughter.

Virginia Beach may be the most populous incorporated city in Virginia, but it’s remarkable how often it seems like a small community. 🙂

Non-sequitir: Glenn Nye is friggin’ awesome.

  2. The NAACP, LaRaza, the KKK and the Nazis are all race-based organizations. While some say that these groups merely “advocate for” their respective groups, opponents generally describe them as “racist” organizations.

I strongly support the right of Americans to freely associate with any of their fellow citizens and I also expect my fellow voters to take such associations into fair account when making choices about their elected representatives.

I would prefer that candidates for elective office have spent their volunteer time with service organizations that benefit all of the citizens, such as Kiwanis, Rotary, Ruritan, and Lions, rather than having devoted their time and effort to a narrowly focused, race-based organization, such as the NAACP, or similar hate groups.

  3. Vivian,

Thanks for pointing me towards the Port Folio article about Glenn Nye.

Seems this young man might show some promise. He already has my vote, but my support for him grows even stronger.

For those who missed it, when asked where he differs with the main stream Democratic Party, he replied:

“Well, first and foremost I think we’ve got to have a balanced budget and be fiscally responsible. It’s important for the future, the strength of our economy and I would be in favor of a balanced budget amendment to make sure we are much more careful about the way the government spends money. ”

Personally I think that he can use this same point to show where he differs from “Borrow and Spend” Thelma Drake as well.

Now if we can just get this young man to go whole hog and seek the endorsement from, and agree to caucus with, the Blue Dog Democrats. My question for him would be this: If you really believe in fiscal responsibility, why not be a Blue Dog? You can be all over the map on other issues and still be a Blue Dog. If you believe in fiscal responsibility, there is strength in numbers, and fiscal responsibility is what being a Blue Dog is all about.
