Denver-bound!

I’m exhausted but absolutely thrilled to have been elected as an at-large delegate to the Democratic National convention. My journey to become a delegate started about a year ago, when I decided that this was the convention that I wanted to attend. I just wanted to be a witness to history.

More on the convention later but for now, congrats to my fellow slate members who were also elected. On to Denver!

UPDATE: Here is Brian Moran’s speech from the convention

About Vivian J. Paige

A former candidate, I've learned a lot about politics, both good and bad. I'd prefer more of the former and a lot less of the latter and I'm trying to do my part!

  1. Congrats! I will admit to having voted for you individually and not in the slate. There were several other very deserving ladies from Hampton Roads who I also chose to support, like Susan Rowland who is also off to Denver.

Wow, I am just now coming back to life after a seriously kick …..”tush” party thrown by Jon Bowerbank last night. Thank you, I think, Mr. Bowerbank!

Maybe Linda B (or others) can provide us some pictures from the hugely successful and well attended poolside Unity party Friday night!

  2. Again, I ask you to clear up my ignorance of the delegate election process.

“The At Large delegate counting took a bit of time, because the slate didn’t win outright and individual votes had to be counted.”

So, the voters could simply vote for all the candidates on a “slate”? If the slate does not get >50% of the vote, then the ballots are counted as individuals, with those on the slate getting the slate votes plus whatever other votes they may pick up? How many of these slates were there?

  3. Mr. NN Dem, will do, as soon as I have a few minutes. Thanks for setting this up for Jim Webb to come to the event Friday night. He even signed the three books I bought for my famly and did it with a smile.
    Thanks to all.
    On to Denver.

  4. Mouse – yes, the voters could vote for the slate. Yes, the count works that way. There was only one slate on the ballot.

  6. I found out that the Obama slate was also elected. From what I hear, the counting took four hours! I don’t have the entire slate for them, particularly the PLEO, but I understand that among the PLEO delegates were Sen. Henry Marsh, Sen. Yvonne Miller and Sen. Louise Lucas.

I *think* this is the slate for the Obama At Large delegates:
    Mark Goodwyn
    Pixie Bell
    Bob Hovis
    Abbi Easter
    Mark Keam
    Gaylene Kanoyton
    Mark Sickles
    Judy Rasmussen
    Mark Federici
    Chrisi West
    Anthony Burfoot
    Margo Horner
    Alt. Scott Surovell
    Alt. Grindly Johnson

  7. Congrats Vivian. I am exhausted too. I also am proud to have voted for you, Rachel Rifkind, and the slate. As somebody who has been to several national convention, I can tell you, you are going to have a blast – I hope you enjoy every moment of it!

  8. thank you for the information- although i am not happy to hear the obama slate won- all of them were originally on both the PLEO and at large ballot- they split off which made sure that the 3 woman left on the PLEO would go- and 4 of the 5 men left would- the rest formed the Obama Slate when they are really Party leaders when there were many many grass roots workers who are the back bone of getting any candidate elected on the ballots- we were shut out at the congressional conventions by decptive behavior and now at the State by the formation of this slate that should have stayed under the party leaders catagory- i am sure just because it appeared they were indorsed by the Obama campaign- I would much rather see woman like Jhana go! It should be a fair mix of the grassroots workers who give their hearts and souls as well as the party leaders- i think we need to take a serious look at how we treat the people in our own party- I really feel sick now!!

  9. Amy LaMarca should be on the list of Obama at-large delegates. Pixie Bell was a PLEO. Or at least I think so. I was still counting DNC ballots when the caucuses split up and the Obama PLEO balloting took place, and I haven’t seen a list of the winners in that group either.

  10. OK, I found a list of the Obama PLEO slate, which was elected:

    Pixie Bell
    Louise Lucas
    Yvonne Miller
    William Euille
    Frank Hall
    Dwight Jones

  12. There is a definite downside to allowing lazy voting.

  13. Contrats! I hope you have a good time while you’re out here.

When I went to my local caucus in February I got the idea that it would be cool to go to the convention since it’s actually in my state. I got voted as a delegate/alternate to the county assembly/convention. Then I got voted again to the 6th congressional district assembly convention. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend the 6DC or later assemblies and conventions because I just didn’t have the time to dedicate to them. Also, I found that I was clearly not going to get elected because I didn’t have the time to put into it.

I don’t know how anyone with a job and a family can put in all the time required to get to the convention.

  15. Hey Bryus – sorry I missed your comment earlier. Yes, some of us with a job and a family still manage to put in the time to get to the convention.

Congrats, Jeff! Hope to see you there.
