I have been glued to the TV and computer for the last few hours since getting a phone call from a friend urging me to turn on the TV. The shooting in Arizona of Rep. Gabby Giffords and others is almost beyond belief. The Congresswoman is expected to survive but
five six others, including a federal judge and a child, did not.
There are no words to express the range of emotions that I’m feeling right now. Rep. Giffords was shot while holding a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a grocery store. Glenn Nye, former 2nd CD representative, held a few of those last year. His predecessor, Thelma Drake, held several similar events, called “Coffee with the Candidate,” which I attended and reported on. I just can’t imagine a shooter at those events – just can’t.
Of everything I’ve heard or read over the last few hours, this tweet said it best:
I hope every member of Congress will hold a Congress on Your Corner event next Saturday to show that violence will not defeat democracy
My prayers are with the families of all who have been affected by these senseless act.
