I had the pleasure of speaking last evening at a student gathering at the University of Virginia. Hosted by Queer & Allied Activism, the meeting was also attended by members of Minority Squared and StudCo Diversity Initiatives.
I was impressed with the activism that these students have taken on. A couple of them had been arrested in conjunction with the Equality Rides being done by Soulforce. One member had been arrested for participating in the Living Wage protests and had to leave to meet with his lawyer.
I talked for a bit about my experience as a candidate for office and then opened the floor for questions. Again, the students impressed me with the caliber of their questions. We covered a lot of ground in about an hour and a half, from the marriage amendment to the Senate race.
Thanks to Seth, Julianne, Wyatt, Kim, Ben and all the other participants whose names I don’t recall for making the 2 1/2 drive to Charlottesville (and the trip up and down 8 flights of steps – twice – in my hotel where the elevator was broken) and back worthwhile. I’m very humbled to have been asked to visit with you and I hope I’ll see you again soon.
To the two women who said that they planned to run for office: go for it! I look forward to having the opportunity to vote for you.
WOOHOO! That’s the people we need.
Yep. My thouggts exactly 😉
