Congressional chairs to be all liberal?

The AP has a story about who is in line to become chairs of the various committees when the Democrats win control of the House of Representatives this fall. The entire cast can best be described as liberal:

Only two of 20 earned grades of less than 90 percent on last year’s voting records from the liberal Americans for Democratic Action interest group. Half had perfect scores of 100 from the ADA — or would have had it not been for missed votes.

The list includes:

  • John Dingell (Michigan) – Energy and Commerce Committee
  • David Obey (Wisconsin) – Appropriations Committee
  • Charles Rangel (New York) – Ways and Means Committee
  • George Miller (California) – Education and the Workforce Committee
  • John Conyers (Michigan) – Judiciary Committee
  • Bennie Thompson (Mississippi) – Homeland Security Committee
  • Alcee Hastings (Florida) – Intelligence Committee

It is interesting that such unabashed liberals are all in line. With the Democratic Party moving farther to the right over the years, will this result in a shift? Probably not.

Even if Democrats win control of the House, it would almost certainly be by a narrow margin in which the balance of power would rest with moderate Democrats.
