As I was searching the internet for images for my July 4th post, I came across a website, Unity08, where the above image was displayed. Intrigued, I read a little further:
Unity08 is a diverse group of Americans who believe that neither of today’s parties reflects the aspirations, concerns or will of the majority of Americans. Both parties have polarized and alienated voters. Both are unduly influenced by single-issue groups. Both are excessively dominated by money.
I’ll agree with that.
Unity08 is committed to presenting a third presidential ticket and platform – one that addresses the issues and challenges of the 21st Century – to the American voters in 2008.
We will not waste time pointing fingers. Instead, we will focus on how America can find common ground on critical issues – to give the overlooked moderate majority a voice and a choice in 2008.
Laudable goal, although I disagree with the viability of a third party at this point in our country. But at least they are trying to do something and are participating in the process, which is more than can be said for a lot of people. As a part of this, they are asking people to declare a new kind of independence – from politics without a purpose – by signing the petition above, which is to be forwarded to Congressional leaders.
Here in the Virginia political blogsphere, folks are writing about Independence Day. Alice Marshall has the entire Declaration of Independence. Jim Hoeft is growing more cynical about our “independence.” Alton has a link to an online citizenship test. Shaun Kenney is having a little fun with the holiday. And Jerry Griffin recalls his USMC enlistment 31 years ago. No doubt tomorrow we will have a slew of posts on what Independence Day means to many other bloggers.
Y’all have a good Independence Day. Don’t eat too many hot dogs and try to stay cool. And, at some point, stop and think for a minute about what independence means to you.
As for me – well, perhaps I’ll head over and sign that petition 🙂
Great post!
