Al Weed: I need to send this guy some $$

My mail has been piling up on the hall table. Today, it was time to pay bills so I had to go thru it all. As I was sorting thru, I noticed a piece of mail from Al Weed.

Now, I don’t live in the 5th but I did meet Al at the blogger’s conference in June. So I opened up the letter, fully expecting the obligatory response card and envelope to fall out. Instead, all that was included was a letter addressed to “Dear Fellow Democrat,” outlining Weed’s background and why he wants to be elected. At the end of the letter, he gives his website address, email and phone number.

And then he says thanks.

No request for money. Just thanks for my commitment to the Democratic Party. And the letter is actually signed in ink. Not a computer-generated signature, but real, ballpoint ink.

Here in the 2nd, I’ve gotten several mailers from Thelma Drake. Haven’t gotten anything from Phil Kellam. And Al Weed sends out this letter.

I’m impressed by his background, I’m impressed by his willingness to run. And, because he didn’t ask, I’m going to send him a little something.

Al Weed, Democrat for Congress

Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

  1. Welll……..

… keep in mind they have machines that will sign in ink. Believe it or not, that was a form letter.

Still, it’s interesting that he’s sending mail to people outside his district. That there was no money ask is very interesting indeed.

  2. Naw – this is the real deal. No machine signed thing here. Now, I don’t think that the person signing it was actually Al, mind you. Probably some volunteer. But still – it’s cool that a human signed it.

  3. I have personally used the computers at Al Weed’s HQ and they could not pull that off. It’s a form letter definitely – no campaign would get anywhere without mail merge – but it’s definitely some good old-fashioned pen on paper.

I can just see Al and the interns now, signing stacks of letters while ploughing through reams of phone calls. It’s amazing what you can get done while waiting for phones to ring and voicemail messages to end!

  4. Oh yes, it is a form letter. I hope I didn’t imply otherwise. And no need for mail merge on this one. It’s not personalized in any way. And the address on the envelope is on a label.

Yeah – I can see folks sitting around, signing letters, stuffing them in envelopes and sticking on address labels and stamps. Good, old-fashioned way of doing things 😉
