Pilot amendment report: VCA and mine are better

This has got to be about the lamest report I’ve seen on the Marshall Newman town hall meeting yesterday. I mean, couldn’t the reporter have bothered to bone up just a little on the issues before she covered the meeting? How about just reading the amendment? How about knowing that gay marriage is already illegal in Virginia?

Yes, I know that I should keep it civil but it always makes my blood boil when a newspaper reporter doesn’t do their homework. Like it or not, too many people rely on the newspaper as a sole source of information. I believe they have a responsibility to the readers to be as informed as possible about that which they write. Don’t show up cold (and late, in this case) and try to figure out what is being discussed from the nature of the conversation!

And they wonder why blogs are becoming more popular.

VCA’s report is here and mine is here.

  1. It’s nice to know that other people realize that the news media is not as it once was. It seems to me that the “news” has been turned into entertainment, and that if the story does not surround a celebrity, a rich white girl, or prurient antics, then the media will not cover it. Whatever happened to people who want to stay informed so as to make wiser choices in life? Oh, that’s right, we’re still here. In fact, I would venture to say that the majority of us could be classified in that category. The newspapers just missed it.

The media may have attained a spike in their ratings with the “Hard Hitting News” format in the mid to late 90’s, but it has worn thin. Most of my friends here in the Pacific Northwest don’t even watch the news, or pick up the newspaper. To them, it’s the same story over and over again, with nothing pertinent or real going on. Not to mention the fact that most of the time the media seems to get the stories wrong, which then angers those who may have been directly or indirectly involved with the situation.

All the while the editors and producers are wondering why their ratings are not quite what they should be…
