Ex-Portsmouth sheriff indicted

Former Portsmouth sheriff Gary Waters was indicted today on three misdemeanor criminal charges related his misuse of campaign funds and inmates at the jail. The charges were unauthorized work by an inmate, failing to report a campaign contribution and unlawfully disposing of campaign funds. If convicted, he faces 36 months in jail and a $7,500 fine.

Waters was defeated in the Democratic primary last year and then ran an unsuccessful write-in campaign in last fall’s election.
