I attended former governor and future president Mark Warner’s pig roast today. The event was held at Rappahannock Bend Farm in King George. I’m pretty bad at estimating crowd sizes but I’d say there was probably 1,000 people there from all over. The Virginia blogsphere was well represented – I had a chance to chat with Waldo Jacquith, Virginia Centrist, James Martin, Kenton Ngo, Mark Brooks, Claire Gastanaga, Ben Tribbett, and the blogfather himself, Jerome Armstrong. There may have been others there as well. I had every intention of live-blogging the event, but I was having too much fun chatting with folks to bother with it. And, I didn’t take any notes so I’m posting this from memory – no slights intended if I forgot to list anybody.
I saw a lot of folks from the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee and a few from Norfolk. Of course, lots of politicians were there, including Brian Moran, Lionel Spruill, Creigh Deeds, Phil Kellam and Jim Webb. It struck me that unless Kellam and Webb were making fundraising contacts, they shouldn’t have been there. Seems to me their time would have been better spent elsewhere. After all, I doubt if they picked up any votes. (That’s why I didn’t go last year.)
Warner came out around 1pm and folks stood in line to greet him. When I left around 5pm, he was still standing there and there was still a line!
The pig was good, the lemonade great, the conversations awesome and we only got rained on a couple of times. All in all, this was a good time. I look forward to next year.
And I picked up a couple of tips that I can use at my Memorial Day Bash next year 😉
I have one question. Was Benny Lambert there?
I didn’t see him
The always wonderful Vivian Paige (VJP, not VPJ)! Boy was it alot of fun… Meet tons of new people, including Phil Kellam, who is the most down to earth and wonderful guy… Also, Brian Moran was very impressive and I finally got to meet Viola Baskerville!!! (I shook her hand once but this was much cooler)
BTW: I promise that i gave out all the stickers 🙂
