Marshall Newman amendment rally

I attended the previously mentioned Marshall Newman amendment rally this afternoon at Mt. Trashmore. While the group was small, it was enthusiastic. I got there a bit late so I missed the speech given about the impact of the amendment on domestic violence. I did get there in time to participate in the holding up of signs on busy Independence Blvd. That part of the rally was covered by the local CBS affiliate, WTKR, and the report was on the 11pm news featuring an interview with yours truly.

While working the intersection, I was struck by the number of people who, when asked to Vote NO, said “for what?” This amendment is flying under the radar right now. We’ve got to get the word out about it. The last thing that needs to happen is for people to go to the polls without being aware of the consequences of the amendment.

The Virginian-Pilot is doing their part. Today’s editorial takes on the opinion issued by Attorney General Bob McDonnell. Entitled “Error of omission,” the editorial says:

supporters encourage people to vote for the amendment by claiming that it’ll have no unintended consequences, that all it does is define marriage as one man, one woman and one union. To do so, of course, they have to ignore the broad and imprecise language of the amendment. Unfortunately, McDonnell has, too.

Writing discrimination into the Bill of Rights, invading our privacy and unintended consequences make the case. Vote NO, Virginia!

We need to get this ad on TV. Now’s the time to volunteer and contribute.

  1. I really do believe that blogging has and will grow to have a huge impact on politics and news, but it will always only go so far. It really is scary how many people have no clue about this amendment. I mean one way or another this will be history and…

So… uh… they did get that baby killer in Thailand… right?
