A little thing, I know. But annoying nonetheless. My last name gets misspelled so often. Heck, it’s even misspelled on my birth certificate š¦ But trust me, it’s Paige, with an “i.” My passport has it right. My driver’s license, too. (My middle name is misspelled on my driver’s license, though.) My social security card is right. I have a deed from 1874 with my great-grandfather’s name on it. Yep, Paige, with an “i.”
Maybe if I had a last name like Stephonopoulos, I could understand people misspelling it. But Paige is so simple. My great niece, Paige, can spell it correctly and she’s only five. If a five-year-old can do it, why can’t everyone else?
When in doubt, include the “i.” Or better yet, just ask me. I’ll be happy to tell you how to spell it. My standard answer: it’s Paige, with an “i.”
I know I am guilty of it once (you were quick to point it out, though I don’t blame you), but I can tell you this much; I can commiserate with you. My last name is not Smith or Johnson, but it is common enough where I figure most people would have no trouble misspelling it. I guess it just becomes problematic when a name is close in spelling to an inproper noun or another name.
Page, I mean Paige with or without the ” i ” is pronounced the same. Just kidding. I just wanted to comment about the interview Chris Wallace had with President Clinton. Wallace got his answers and got lectured also. He got more than he bargained for. Fox News commentatoes are use to cuttting you short. Clinton did not allow this to happen. Anyone appearing on Hannity, O’Reilly, Scarborough and other shows can learn from Clinton’s interview.
I feel for you, Vivian. I’ve spent most of my adult life having to tell people my last name is spelled “with a K, like the floor wax.”
My father once received a check for jury duty pay with the last name spelled with the usual C. The clerk who gave it to him insisted it was taken directly off a form that he himself had filled out. Eventually he got a new check, but it took some doing.
William – I saw a post about the Chris Matthews bit. I’ve got the video but haven’t had time to watch it.
Viv, the last name is Hoeft. I understand.
As for the Wallace interview, wow. I always appreciate it when a reporter gets schooled when they’re perceived of bias. I hope you get a chance to watch it.
We should take notes in case we ever get interviewed.
Is this a takeoff of “It’s Liza with a “Z”, not Lisa with an “S”, cause Lisa with an “S” spells – !!! I feel for you because I have a similar problem. Everyone wants to add an “H” to my last name to make it into a more common word…
Happens to me all the time, too, only my first name. Tell me, when it’s pronounced “val-er-ee,” why do people spell it “Valeria”? I’ve even had Valeree, Valeri, Valery, Valorie, and even Valaria! The list doesn’t stop there, either, iIt can be so frustrating! Don’t get me started on my middle and last names either… š
