How about those Redskins? Yes! Finally a win. Over the lowly Texans but hey, I’ll take it 😉 Brunell looked like an All-Pro quarterback yesterday. He set the record for consecutive completions in a game, with 22 in a row.
I actually missed almost the entire first half (long church service yesterday) but what I saw makes me think the team is getting up to speed on the new offense. Clinton Portis looked sharp and Ladell Betts set a personal rushing record.
The defense was above average, although not as good as the offense. They only managed one sack. Considering that David Carr has been sacked more than any other quarterback in the league, they should have had more sacks.
Overall, I’m just glad they didn’t tank against the Texans. Next week – Jacksonville. I don’t expect that game to be as easy as this one was.

One of the things that concerns me is that Brunell was just dinking-and-dunking all day long–almost all of his passes were screen passes and tosses of about 10 yards. I think he only had one throw that was in the air for more than 20 yards.
Not that I’m complaining. A win-is-a-win.
I’m just not sold yet that the Skins can be a playoff team with Brunell at QB. The test against the Jaguars will give us an answer one way or another. It’s great to have Portis back though.
You know, the short passes used to be the way to go. Wasn’t that the hallmark of the West Coast offense? Remember the 49ers winning with Joe Montana doing that?
Great point. We’re definitely watching the West Coast offense at work.
My recollection is that Montana and Young; and Gannon (during the Super Bowl year for the Raiders); and McNabb occassionally stretched the field with the deep ball. The QB may only take 2 or 3 shots down the field the entire game, but it was enough to keep defenses honest (and the underneath routes open).
I guess in theory if teams start stacking players near the line of scrimmage that it will open up the deep routes–maybe the deep routes just haven’t been open. The question though is can Brunnell still deliver the ball? Last year he was able to deliver some great throws to Santana Moss. I haven’t seen that this year. I can’t see the Skins keeping really good defenses off-balance with just a short passing game and Portis.
The again, I’m not getting paid $2 million a year for running an NFL offense!
This weekend’s game will provide a great benchmark for where the team is at and what they still need to improve on. I’m looking forward to watching it.
As I recall, the whole point of short passes is RAC – run after the catch. They actually used to keep a stat on that (not sure if they still do). And yes, you have to take a few shots down the field.
