I was away from my computer when this story broke. My head is still spinning so I’ll post my thoughts later.
Governor Tim Kaine had this to say:
I can understand and appreciate the difficult and intensely personal decision of my good friend Mark Warner. Over the 25 years I’ve known Mark, beginning as law school classmates and extending through my service as his lieutenant governor and working partner, my respect for and confidence in his judgment, business skill, and political instincts have only grown. I was proud to work with Mark to produce results for Virginia, and while I looked forward to campaigning on his behalf across the nation, I respect his decision today. Our country is better for his willingness to engage in the public square, and I look forward to supporting Mark without hesitation in whatever decisions he ultimately makes about his future in public service.
Democratic Caucus Chairman Brian issued this statement:
I was truly hoping that Mark Warner would take our success in Virginia to a national stage that so badly needs his results oriented message. I was looking forward to being his first and most active volunteer and supporter. But I’m the father of 2 young children, and I know family comes first.
Virginia needs and deserves continuation of the success of Marks four years. Twelve years ago he encouraged me to run for the House of Delegates, now I’m proud to stand by his side in whatever future course he should take. Virginians are lucky to have him as a public servant.
Gov. Kaine:”while I looked forward to campaigning on his behalf across the nation,”
Translation… I could have really done well trying to attach myself at the hip to a successful Gov, and raised my profile nationwide… (the rest was muttering, and gnashing of teeth)
I liked Arnold Swartzeneger’s line today, on people trying to tie him to the President (W). He said:
“People trying to tie me to the President, is like trying to tie me to an Oscar”. 😀
Thanks for putting these up, Vivian. I was extremely interested in hearing what Kaine had to say about Warner’s decision. After all, Warner’s role in Tim Kaine being elected is often consider a significant part of why Warner had received so much attention as a potential candidate.
I would be nice to have another President from Virginia. Chuck Robb had a shot, until the incident with the centerfold.
Oh well, I guess Virginia’s only hope at the White House rests in the hands of Jim Gilmore.
Just kidding. 🙂

Creigh Deeds’ Statement
So, is the ticket for 2009 now Mark Warner, Brian Moran and Creigh Deeds? Or, better yet, Warner, Baskerville and Moran?
The folks who have been lining up must be worrying about when Mark will make it clear whether he’s running for US Senate in 2008 or Governor in 2009. Won’t be Warner v. Warner, again … Warner vs. Gilmore in either ’08 or ’09? bring it on ….
