From Letters to the Editor in today’s Pilot:
Marriage amendment is antithesis of GOP values
Like most Virginians who visit the polls this November, I will be voting Republican, but unlike most Republicans I will be voting against the proposed constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage by defining marriage as being between one man and one woman. This amendment is the very antithesis of the values upon which the Republican Party claims to stand.
I vote Republican because I don’t like the government to tell me what to do. I don’t like Big Brother defining how I should live and what values my family should or should not hold. I don’t like the state taking half my paycheck and redistributing my hard-earned wealth.
In theory, the Republican Party stands against the “progressive” ideology of the “Nanny State,” yet this gay marriage amendment that it champions embodies the progressive agenda to a T.
This amendment is designed to expand the scope of government, allowing the state to intrude into the American family, redefining it as a government institution rather than as a private contract.

Good stuff. It ought to be printed up and left at all the Republican clubs in Virginia.
Thank you for posting this.
I’m happy to do so. There are a number of conservatives who understand that this amendment is the anthithesis of conservative principles. The ones who don’t are the so-called “social conservatives,” those who want to impose their morality on the rest of us.
I absolutely loved talking to an Allen supporter this afternoon who was putting a Vote NO sign next to her Allen sign.
As has been said of the (modern) Republican Party: “They want to shrink the government just small enough to fit into your bedroom.”
