As expected, the Virginian-Pilot endorsed Democratic challenger Jim Webb for U.S. Senate. Unlike its earlier endorsement of Thelma Drake, this one was an affirmative endorsement:
Over the past few months, Virginians have started to get to know James Webb.
There are still gaps in that knowledge, but on two of the most essential ingredients for a U.S. senator – character and intellect – the record is clear.
Webb has an abundance of both.

The United States faces threats as daunting as any in its history: international terrorism, militant Islamic fundamentalism in Iran and elsewhere, nuclear adventurism in North Korea and the chaos in Iraq. To Senate debates on those matters, Webb would add a wise and principled voice.
That is the type of candidate that legions of voters, fed up with partisan political scripts, say they want. James Webb promises to be the kind of public servant and leader Virginia and the nation now need.
The Pilot did not use this endorsement to take potshots at George Allen for his failure to respond to their requests for an interview. They did point out that his website features no information on Iraq, which is considered the top issue of the day. And they pointed out that both candidates have had stumbles in this campaign.
With 11 days to go, no doubt the Webb campaign is quite pleased with this endorsement.

So, you want some reasons to vote for someone other than Jim Webb? Here’s some Webb writing nuggets for you:
<quotes from Webb’s books snipped. If you want to read them, check out just about any anti-Webb blog>
One does not need to be a psychologist to see a clear pattern here. Combine this with Mr. Webb’s reference to the the United States Naval Academy as being a “Horny Woman’s Dream” and you have the complete picture of the man who holds the Democratic Party’s nomination for the United States Senate from Virginia.
Paul – as far as I know, this is the first time you have visited my blog. And I really don’t appreciate you posting those quotes here, as this is a family-friendly environment. As the result, I have removed the offending language.
Don’t be upset with Paul about the offensive language. To lay blame, you need only look at the man you are supporting. I agree with Paul in that the content of Jim Webb’s book gives us a great deal of insigt into the character and morals of this candidate.
Hey, Brian and Paul, do you want to talk about offensive language? Let’s talk about your boy Allen.
If you were anything other than power-focused hypocrites, you’d be too ashamed to even post this tripe of yours.
