And the endorsements continue. Today, the Daily Press, which serves the Peninsula, endorsed Democratic challenger Jim Webb for Senate over Republican incumbent George Allen.
Today and Monday we’ll explain why we think change is so necessary, why voters should turn to Democrat Webb and turn out incumbent George Allen. We’ll focus on the war and national security today, because that is the pre-eminent issue in this election. Other issues will be addressed on Monday. But the nub of it is this: Allen and the Republican majority of which he is a part have had their chance, and we’re not better off for it – not in terms of national security or fiscal soundness, and certainly not in terms of political health. Webb offers the best opportunity for new and better directions.

Since the war began in 2003, Allen has yet to present a thoughtful statement on the complexities of what has become an increasingly intolerable predicament.
That alone argues for his political retirement.
Tomorrow’s editorial will look at the issue of partisanship versus independence. Stay tuned.

Allen is an empty suit whose eye is ever turned toward his rich masters, careful to avoid incurring their wrath by asking questions or taking an independent path. Allen has no original ideas, no gumption, and no sense of duty. He does not appear to understand that a large part of his job is to check the power of the executive, to question policy, and sometimes to take the difficult path.
Jim Webb has courage and drive. Once he’s in the Senate I expect he’ll spend a few weeks getting acclimated and then after that the gloves will come off and he’ll ask the hard questions and maybe blow the doors off the place with his pointed criticisms. Good for him.
VJP, I saw your picture with Jim Webb in today’s Voter Guide in the VP. It was from the NAACP dinner. Yeah, you! 🙂
I’m a Virginian, and I’m definintely voting Webb. I don’t know if we can sway the whole state, but I’ll do my part.
I hadn’t seen the paper today but when I got to the Drake/Allen rally, someone mentioned that I was in the paper with Webb.
I wasn’t even aware that the picture had been taken. Hey – don’t they have to get a model’s release in order to use a photo if the person is recognizable? 😉
I’m a Husband, father, Virginian, and Soldier who has deployed in support of the “Global War on Terror”, and I find the current leadership of Senator Allen inept. I have young Soldiers that have asked harder questions of orders and directions about the War than Senator Allen has of the President. As a Virginian I feel it’s time to have two Senators like every other State in the Union and not someone looking to be President or going along to get along. The fact that Sen. John Warner went uncontested in his last bid for re-election speaks volumes about what he’s done for the Commonwealth. What has Sen. Allen done for us lately? What has he stood for lately? I have spent a year away from the people I love most fighting for what? We have spent more on their urban neighborhoods than George Allen would ever vote to spend in ours. We have built more new schools for them than George Allen would ever vote to have built for us. I want a fighter on capital hill, someone to put a check on the Executive branch, not someone waiting to become apart of it. Jim Webb is the man to fight for Virginia and stand along side Sen. Warner in standing up to the White House. Sec. Jim Webb is the right man for Virginia and the only clear chose for Senate. Vote for Jim Webb, Virginia needs equal representation in the Senate. Your Soldiers and service men and women from Virginia need the kind of leadership Jim Webb can provide.
