… you believe that government should stop at your door. Here’s what the Republican Liberty Caucus says:
The RLC supports a strict construction of the Bill of Rights as a defense against tyranny, the expansion of those rights to all voluntary consensual conduct under the Ninth and Tenth Amendments, and the requirements of equal protection and due process under the Fourteenth Amendment. The RLC resolution, adopted unanimously by the Board of Directors, opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment as clear violation of these principles.
“Marriage is a religious, social and personal matter,” says RLC Advisory Board Director Douglas Lorenz, “that should not be dictated, endorsed, subsidized or restricted by any government. The right to pursue individual happiness is a fundamental liberty that should be free of all state intervention. True love and genuine personal commitment do not need legal support or sanction.” (via Rick Sincere)

So you’re voting in a way that would move against your ideal? Huh.
Not at all. As I said in comments 7, 9, 11, and 15, if that goal is achieved, this amendment will have no effect whatsoever, because the state will not recognize, sanction, or prohibit any marriages whatsoever.
Jack,
Marriage and civil unions come packaged with rights and benefits. Since there would be no “rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage”, how many churches do you think will be standing in line to support this?
Well, the LDS churches would be more than happy to have the government restrictions lifted, perhaps even to the point of giving up their marital benefits. (Evidence of this can be seen in some LDS sects, where the women are “married” by the church, but that marriage is illegal and certainly has no legal benefits.) Other than that, none, which is why I don’t expect that ideal to ever be achieved, and I just have to make the best of the situation as it is.
Jack,
You might also get support from Mormons who advocate and practice polygamy. Isn’t that one of you favorite words ? Currently they don’t reap any government “rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage” from multiple spouses.
Vivian,
I apologize for “contributing to a tangential thought”. So, I’ll keep future posts revelent to the original topic discussion which is “… you believe that government should stop at your door.”
BS– LDS are the Mormons.
