At tonight’s Norfolk City Democratic Committee meeting, Delegate Kenny Alexander (D-89th) announced that he is voting NO. Del. Alexander is a member of the Privileges & Elections committee and served on the Marshall sub-committee, which brought us the so-called Marriage Amendment. He admitted tonight that he voted for the amendment coming out of the sub-committee, then against it when it was before the full committee and then again voted in favor of the amendment in its final form.
Del. Alexander said that he now believes that the amendment will harm heterosexual couples, because of the language “unmarried individuals.” Further, he said that when he thinks of “legal status” he believes that such things as wills and other contracts will be voided if this amendment is passed.
I’m thrilled that Alexander is going to vote NO.
Also in attendance tonight was Senator Yvonne Miller(D-05). Senator Miller has been a vocal critic of the amendment and voted against it. Tonight, she once again expressed her concern about it, saying that she is afraid of who they will take on next, should the amendment pass. The Senator also told us that we cannot afford to allow our Bill of Rights to contain discrimination against anyone. If you have never heard Senator Miller speak, you should. She’s a powerful speaker and grabs everyone’s attention.
The Vote NO signs that were brought to tonight’s meeting flew out of there. Tremendous leadership on this issue was on display tonight.

I’m voting no on this so-called “marriage” amendment. I am an incorporated businesswoman and that legal status thing makes me twitch. I also think that if this does pass on the state level that it will be the legal status issue that takes it to the Supreme Court where it will be voted down.
