I’ve now confirmed with several sources that there will be a Republican challenger for Paula Miller’s 87th House District seat. The man is being championed by Ward 5 councilman Randy Wright. What makes this so interesting is that this same guy was mentioned as a challenger for Wright in last May’s council election. I saw the two of them together at the Drake/Allen rally I attended last Sunday. In her first attempt to capture the seat vacated by Drake when elected to Congress, Wright supported Miller. In last year’s re-election campaign against the same challenger, Republican Michael Ball, Wright basically stayed out of the race.
The 87th, which is where I live, is a conservative district that the Republicans would love to reclaim.
Most speculation I’ve heard over the last couple of months has revolved around Hank Giffin, the retired vice admiral and head of Veterans for Drake. Is that who you’re talking about, or aren’t you talking?
Randy Wright appointed Hank Giffin to chair the “T-ing” of Ocean View Avenue and Shore Drive. Did he do this to give him more name recognition? Who knows which way Randy is going? I believe it is whichever way the breeze is coming off of the bay.
Whoever challenges Delegate Miller will have a hard time. She won the last election handily even with a third candidate who campaigned. The Virginia Republican Party will probably not drop a dime in this race after Ball’s 2 losses. Mr. Giffin is also too conservative for the moderate 87th.
