Daily Press endorses Kellam

In their house race endorsements today, the Daily Press endorsed Democratic challenger Phil Kellam for the 2nd Congressional District.

The editorial board put tremendous weight on the issue of Iraq.

But the war in Iraq and the struggle against Islamic fundamentalism are the highest priorities. In no area of decision-making is it more important to have intelligent, independent, thoughtful representatives.

In endorsing Kellam, the board had this to say:

If it were not for the war in Iraq, the Editorial Board would endorse Drake, despite some important differences with her. She seems more capable of the two and as much in tune with the general outlook of her constituents as Kellam. But there is the war. Drake’s position on that conflict is so at odds with what we see as the reality that the endorsement goes to Kellam. There must be accountability for the Republican Congress that failed in its oversight role, and Kellam is a worthy candidate, well known to the district with a solid record in elected office. A vote for him is a vote for change. As uncertain as the direction of that change might be, it is certain that change is needed.

In the other races, the Daily Press endorsed Randy Forbes (R-4th), Bobby Scott (D-3rd) and Jo Ann David (R-1st).

  1. That’s a sad endorsement for Kellam. They’ve essentially said they would pick the other person (Drake) even though they disagree with her but are picking Kellam simply to send a message to the Republicans. They know and acknowledge Drake is better. Man, how heartfelt. They’re saying, we’ll endorse whatever empty suit has a D by his name to send a message. Amazing how Kellam has fallen off the cliff so quickly in this race.
