At this morning’s Webb rally, I spotted this sign. The young man holding it was the son of Thomas Miller. I wanted to know why this Republican was supporting Jim Webb so I asked him to send me something for my blog. Below is what he wrote.
To borrow a phrase from a famous left wing liberal, Dwight D. Eisenhower, “The old administration cannot repair what it failed to prevent.” After 9/11 the world was behind us. All we needed was decisive and intelligent leadership to fight terrorist networks and religious fanaticism. Instead we ended up chasing George Bush’s “gut” feelings into a dark alley and now will have to pay a much higher price to win this war on terror. Thanks to hollow leaders like George Allen putting their own career ambitions above our national interest, there has been no effort by Congress to rein Bush in. Many once proud Republicans like myself realize this administration and its blindly loyal followers like George Allen do not represent real Republican values. Reckless foreign policy, maintaining support for a war by taking a burden which should be shared by all and instead purposely placing it entirely on military families, lowering taxes by mortgaging our future to countries like China that do not share our values and dismantling our rights as citizens in exchange for false promises of being “safer”; these are policies real Republicans should never support. To those who still esteem qualities the word Republican used to stand for, join the many other Republicans supporting Jim Webb, a candidate willing to put himself on the line for his country yet again by standing up against the failed agenda of George Bush. Because of the disaster in Iraq the President could have prevented, most Americans wish he were up for re-election right now; well he is. A vote to defeat George Allen is a vote to move beyond the failed policies of George Bush now.
