Everyone in my family was happy to hear that news from Joe this afternoon. It can’t get any worse than yesterday. 😦
This season is done. Gibbs is just getting some playing experience for Campbell so we’re competetive next year. Brunell had some great moments this year, and if he were younger he may been even better. But he’s just at the end of his career. It’s time for some new blood out there.
Funny how the guy set the NFL record for consecutive completed passes in a single game, and a few weeks later is benched — made the scape-goat for all that is wrong with the team’s offense.
I’m not scapegoating Brunnell. He’s not all that is wrong with the Redskins by any means. My issue is that the team needs rebuilding and that rebuilding should start sooner rather than later. If Campbell is the future of the Redskins, no sense in having him sit on the bench.
If the team had a chance at the playoffs, I’d say stick with Brunnell. But there is virtually no chance. So go ahead and start the process. Game experience is what Campbell needs.
I will be interested in seeing whether the switch makes any difference. In my opinion, however, a great deal of the problem with the skins is that there is no flexibility in coaching. They start with a game plan and stick with it even if it doesn’t work. Even in the old days, Gibbs was not a risk taker. His attitude, and that of his coaching staff, seems to be that we will play only the players we have decided are best and we will stick with our game plan until it works. Even if we are three touchdowns behind, we will stick with a short-yardage offense using the same players because we know that eventually our game plan will work. This strategy may have worked with the Hogs, Theisman and Riggo, but it doesn’t work with players who are mere mortals.
Gibbs needs some more work on the Offensive Line. Bet money that Gibbs will be working on getting OLmen in the off-season.
DannyBoy — I agree. I’d rather have the best offensive line and a mediocre quarterback than the other way around.
Vivian — You may not have been scapegoating Brunnell, but many people are.
Being no expert, I did see a team that could move the chains and eat up clock last Sunday.
But as soon as they got near the 30 yard line, the defense would adjust and tighten, and the offense didn’t…and they’d hit a wall.
Gibbs isn’t running the offense anymore. Remember they brought in that associate head coach to do that (guy’s name escapes me right now). Something is wrong with the offense – yes, they moved the ball well but they choked once they got close.
