Election winners and losers

Lots of lists of winners and losers in the election are showing up in various places. The latest list comes from Michael Shear at the Washington Post. Among his winners is Delegate Donald McEachin:

The black Democratic delegate from Richmond supported Webb in the primary, when none of his African American political colleagues did.

Included in the losers is State Senator Benny Lambert:

Like McEachin, the black Democratic state senator from Richmond took sides. But the wrong one. He stunned colleagues by endorsing Allen and went further by attending Allen’s fundraiser with President Bush, recording radio ads on Allen’s behalf and choosing to attend the Allen “victory” party instead of Webb’s.

There has been speculation that McEachin will be challenging Lambert in a primary. Whether or not this comes to pass, I doubt many will forget the role that these two played in the election.

  1. Interesting that NLS just discovered this speculation now. I heard it before Lambert’s endorsement. Indeed I’ve heard speculation that Webb’s attachment to McEachin and lack of attention to the rest of the Black Caucus was one of the things that prompted Lambert to jump ship.

That said, Lambert stepped way over the line when he endorsed Allen, and his days may well be numbered. And if it opens a place to bring back Floyd Miles, one of the real good guys, so much the better.
