Monday morning quarterback

I had high hopes for the Redskins yesterday. On Sunday morning, I read this article from the Virginian-Pilot, in which Jim Ducibella laid out the plans to return to smash-mouth football. Good – a return to Redskins-style football. And early in the game, I was not disappointed. The ‘Skins jumped out to a 14-0 lead, following the script of run, run and run some more.

Then the wheels came off.

It seems to me that the turning point was that interception thrown by Campbell. Now, I’m not dogging Campbell here – after all, the kid is only in his 3rd start. But it seems that the rest of the team was deflated by it.

I guess when the only thing you are playing for is pride, it’s kinda hard to stay up. But I certainly wish the players would find a way to stay motivated. I can’t tell you how many times I yelled at the TV that the receivers weren’t coming back for the ball. It seemed like they were going thru the motions: run the pattern and the stop and if the ball wasn’t perfectly placed, oh well. From my vantage point, it looked like there was an overall lack of will.

I hope those guys realize that fans out here are pulling for them. I’m no fair weather Skins fan. If playing their best for the fans is not enough motivation, I’d just as soon see them play elsewhere.

  1. I don’t know, I think it was more the other way around, that Campbell wasn’t getting the support he needed from his line and kept seeing how determined the defense was to throw away a game that started out looking so good. He says he was actually trying to throw the ball away and the pulling on his jersey is what caused it to get to the defender, but that was the sort of a thing a rookie is likely to do. Sometimes you just have to take the sack and live with it. The defense leaked like a sieve.
