The Virginian-Pilot today has a story on a proposed development of 1,180 units of housing geared towards the workforce. The townhouses, duplexes, apartments and single family homes would target those with incomes in the range considered by the city to be workforce: a family of four with income of $48,000 to $72,000.
The project is a 134-acre site located at Princess Anne Road and Independence Blvd. The area is represented by Councilman Bob Dyer, who recognizes the need to have housing affordable housing in the city. “If we want a company to come to Virginia Beach, it’s important that it’s a place that their employees can live in,” Dyer said.
With the cooling housing market and the severe shortage of affordable housing, this is a smart move. Too bad we don’t have a project like this in Norfolk.
Perfect segway… tomorrow (Sat. 12/9), the VBDC at their breakfast (9:00 a.m. at Jason’s Deli – Pembroke Mall) will feature as guest speaker John Boylan, the Homeless Policy and Resources Coordinator for the City of Virginia Beach. I would imagine this would be affordable housing not only for the employees of new companies to VB, but also for the scads of new teachers, firefighters and police officers that need/want to live in and work in the VB community. While I think Mr. Boylan will focus his remarks to the homeless in VB, certainly he can also field questions about workforce housing.
