Stuff that came out while I was at a party tonight:
Salon’s Person of the Year – S. R. Sidarth
“Macaca” most politically incorrect word (via NLS)
Amazing, isn’t it?

Everytime I try and think who Time Magazine is going to pick for their Person of the Year, I keep wanting to say Sidarth, or NLS. My brain can’t get off VA politics and think internationally, I think my “best” guess would probably be Pelosi, Rumsfeld, or one of the Clintons (although I doubt if any of them ‘win’).
Who would you pick Vivian?
What strikes me as amazing is that it is politically incorrect, even offensive, yet “macaca” is used so frequently now; in particular, it seems like a lot of Democrats (or at least people opposed to George Allen) seemed to think it was all right to use though it is compared to that other little racist word starting with a letter found in the middle of the alphabet. I definitely have heard some people shout it out loud when passing by a George Allen campaign spot; let’s know once and for all, is it offensive and these people were in incredibly poor taste, or has its use dulled the insult that it is supposed to be?

Trust me, NO ONE agrees with you more than Ben. He seems to fancy himself as the king maker/breaker in VA.
BTW, Viv, any comment on the UPDATE on NLS that says, “UPDATE: Happy Hannukah Senator Macacawitz. :-)” or are you going to be like every other left leaning blogger that says nothing about tasteless Jewish jokes but attacks for any other kind of derogatory comment?
Remember, though, the person of the year doesn’t have to be PoTY for something good, it could be for something bad as well. The only real criteria is that the person(s) has (have) to have had some sort of major impact that particular year.
My vote, as always, is for Messrs. Stewart and Colbert. Will they get it? Doubtful. Highly unlikely.
Maybe Milton Friedman, but most of his work was in the past, all he is really notable for this year, as callous as this sounds, is dying- he did no new work this year.
Man, I have *no* clue!
Terry – I don’t see NLS or even Sidarth as the Time PoTY. (Great acronym, Genevieve π ) I really haven’t given this much thought. Besides, if it could be done for something bad, the list of potential candidates is quite long π
SW – as I understand it, Ben is Jewish. So while I agree that the jokes are quite tasteless, I think telling them says more about him than about thse supposed butt of the joke (Allen).
Oh so it is ok to make Jewish jokes brcause HE is jewish. Ahh, great justification, one I recall you dismissed once regarding other offensive words.
Also, does he announce he is Jewish or are we to assume?

No doubt, I just meant everytime I’ve given thought to who it could be, my brain keeps thinking VA politics.
