Billy Robinson dead at 64

Billy RobinsonFormer Norfolk Delegate William P. “Billy” Robinson, Jr. has died. Robinson served in the legislature for 20 years, until his defeat by Winsome Sears in 2001. (Coincidentally, the Pilot did a piece on Sears today.)

I have previously written about Robinson’s brilliant career and my hopes that he would find a way back into politics. Diagnosed with liver cancer in August, he surrendered his law license in October.

I hope that Robinson will be remembered for all that he accomplished, not the mistakes that he made. My condolences to his family.

  1. Billy was one of the most charming people I have ever met. Having served with him in the House of Delegates, I can attest to knowledge. I will miss him.

  2. Billy was a great guy but his problems with the Bar were numerous and inexcusable. Virginia lost a large figure with his passing but it was Billy’s own choices that have tarnished his image. It is disappointing when this happens but is a good example of how even the “best” are not above the rules. Godspeed to Billy and my prayers are with his family but any hope that his “mistakes” will be forgotten is a bit naive.
