I’ve been taking a few days of well-deserved rest. Given that it has been almost two years since I’ve had any real time off, I figured I’d better grab it now while I can.
But a couple of things have come up over the last few days that I wanted to comment on. So, I’m taking a mini break from my break 🙂
The Running to Win Workshop for Women, which was scheduled for January 5-7 has been postponed. I’ll post the new date once I get it.
The Norfolk City Democratic Committee Legislative Sendoff is coming up next Wednesday, January 3. Details are here.
James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, passed away on Christmas Day. Probably the song of his I remember the most is “Say it loud: I’m Black and I’m Proud”
Also passing away this week was former President Gerald Ford. I see that Bush has declared Tuesday as a national day of mourning. Ford was one of the members of the Warren Commission and is said to have been the one who reported to J. Edgar Hoover all of the what the committee discussed.
Virgil Goode still doesn’t get it.
Interesting article in the Virginian-Pilot today by Gregory Rodriguez of the LA Times. His article is based on this one by Stanley Crouch of the NY Daily News. Is Obama black? Interesting read, both of them.
And finally, I see that the hoopla over the Virginia Political Blogs aggregator has come to a reasonable conclusion. We now have Waldo’s Virginia Political Blogroll. And yours truly is glad to be included.
Now back to my break. 🙂
I highly recomend sleeping in… oh and home improvment is very fun!
Re: Virgil Just Doesn’t Get It
I was pleased to see that at least one conservative blogger had an intelligent reaction to Mr. Goode’s remarks. NoVa Scout over at Too Conservative wrote about it Christmas Eve, saying he had just returned from a trip to Europe and to the West Coast and was trying to catch up on the news here. Here’s what he said about Virgil:
“So now I’m back and I’ve been cruising the OBDA and other old standards trying to figure out what folks are thinking and doing. One thing that surprises me immensely is how little comment I’m seeing on Virgil Goode’s remarks on the relationship between using the Koran in swearing-in ceremonies to Immigration policy. This got a good deal of press and media coverage in Europe as another indication that we’re all morons (they don’t understand over there that elected officials are not always selected to mirror their constituencies). I thought our usual blogs would be afire with this. Is it just too embarrassing and stupid to talk about? Or have I not gotten around to the right places? (perhaps the liberal blogs are full of this -they’re usually way down my list of stopping points when I’m scrambling to catch up) Or are we hoping it will just go away before someone thinks Republicans other than Mr. Goode think like this (as if we didn’t have enough to worry about already)?”
So that’s what NoVa Scout said. In my view, if many Republicans don’t think like Mr. Goode, more of them should be vocal in saying so. The silence from the Right is deafening.
“Virgil Goode still doesn’t get it.”
HAHAHAHA, nice. Short and to the point.
Thanks for the note about Jan 3rd the yearly “kick out” the legislators party. My only question this year will be why all the delegates and senators favored taking power away from their constituents and handing it over to the Norfolk City Council. As in the HB1439 where they supported a smaller majority, from four-fifths to three-fourths, to sell off our public lands, including wharfs, waterfront property, etc., and gave the council 16 weeks off, as opposed to 12, so they could do their dirty dealings behind closed doors, such as giving away 22 million of our tax dollars to a billionaire, more often.
Alma – sounds like you need to attend the kick off and bring up these issues.
Ms. Paige doesn’t let the reader in on what it is Virgil Goode “doesn’t get.” To prevent (her) cliche from dying a meaningless death right then and there, I will explain:
This has been a helluva year for Virginia. First George Allen caracaturizes himself as a bumbling Dukes of Hazzard-type hick, before a national audience. Goode follows that smash hit with a (similar) Youtube single of his own — his complete with absurd hillbilly accent and all.
I love my immigrant friends, but if someone else doesn’t agree with their presence I suppose that’s their business. We don’t all have to agree on everything.
But, for the love of God, so-called leaders in Virginia should have some self-respect. Furthermore, they should respect their own family members (who become victims of humiliation in the process) and also for the residents of Virginia. Not all of us are drooling bigots.
But with the recent Hick Hit Parade, the national audience would think otherwise. Impressions do matter.
Oh, I’m goin’! Billy and I will be there with video camera. Should be fun, don’t you think?
