New WP feature: Snap

One thing I really like about using WordPress.com as a blogging platform is that the folks here are constantly rolling out new features. The latest one, Snap Preview Anywhere, is being beta-tested and this blog was fortunate to be one of the testers πŸ™‚ Basically, if you hover on a link in a post, a little window pops up that allows you to preview the page you are going to before you go there. Try it on the link in this post. Pretty cool, eh? 😎

  1. SWMBO! Ha! I’ll have to use that one on my kids.

VJP, how’s WP help function? I need to switch VBDems. We are still operating with the old Blogger. I see that WP converts from Blogger.

  2. Hm, that SWMBO creates a bit of a dilemma for me πŸ™‚

Eileen – WP has a pretty good FAQ and the support forum is a wonderful resource. The only downside I have found so far is that no javascript is allowed, which means you can’t do something like the Lefty Blogs feed. No javascript is a security measure and the WP folks won’t budge on this. The LB folks won’t do an RSS feed (because of the strain on the servers) so I don’t see that situation resolving itself. Other things I know to be affected by the no-javascript rule is the BNN search thing, those countdown things you see (like a clock, or the national debt thing), and even Site Meter. (They have written a special HTML-only version of Site Meter for WP.com blogs but some parts of it don’t function, like referring pages or outclicks.)

Oh – and there’s a limited number of themes available and unless you buy the CSS upgrade, you can’t change them. (A lot do have custom headers, though.)

My suggestion to most folks is to set up a blog here and work with it. From what I understand, there is a learning curve.

..but your blog DOES appear on LeftyBlogs Vivian….

  4. Terry – yes, my blog is there. What I’m talking about is that the blogwire thing that allows Lefty Blogs to be displayed in the sidebar. It’s not an RSS feed.

Cory – what you mention in your article is something for the RSS standards group, or whatever the organization is that determines those standards.

Bwana – you get me with those initial thingees πŸ™‚ I have no idea what that stands for, either 😦
